He also highlighted that Canada exports many goods to the U.S., including steel and aluminum, crude oil, and agricultural products, all of which would become more expensive, ultimately causing “real hardship” for Americans.

Trudeau pointed out that Americans have been overpaying for softwood lumber due to unjust tariffs, meaning that the tariffs might make them realize they are hurting themselves.

He emphasized, “Trump was elected on a commitment to make life better and more affordable for Americans; the people south of the border are starting to wake up to the reality that imposing tariffs on everything from Canada will make life much more expensive.”

Experts, including Canada’s former top trade negotiator Steve Verhulst, have warned that if Trump follows through on his tariff threats, the country must be prepared to respond.

Trudeau stated that his government is still considering the “right ways” to respond to the tariffs, knowing that Canada took a very careful approach previously when Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

On Sunday, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre stated, “Every Conservative will tell every American” that tariffs on Canada would be a bad idea, while also portraying Trudeau as a weak leader.

One of his caucus members, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, mentioned that he dined with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and British Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch over the weekend, stating that it is now “important to be strong” with allies.
