मखाना की खेती पोंड या फसल क्षेत्र में औसतन तीन फीट पानी भरे होने पर की जाती है। इसकी नर्सरी नवंबर महीने में लगाई जाती है और चार महीने बाद (फरवरी-मार्च में) इसे स्थानांतरित किया जाता है। पौधों में स्थानांतरण के लगभग पांच महीने बाद फूल आते हैं। इसकी कटाई अक्टूबर-नवंबर में शुरू होती है। नर्सरी से लेकर कटाई तक मखाना की फसल तैयार होने में कुल 10 महीने लगते हैं। मखाना की खेती उन किसानों के लिए और भी लाभकारी है जो पहले से ही अपने निजी तालाबों में मछली पालन कर रहे हैं।
मखाना की मांग सुपरफूड के रूप में बढ़ रही है

Dinesh Pratap Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Horticulture, Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Foreign Trade and Agricultural Export of the Yogi government, said that the cost of the unit allowed by the department of Makhana cultivation is Rs 80 thousand per hectare. In this, the government will give a grant of 50 percent i.e. 40 thousand rupees. For this, farmers will have to register with the District Horticulture Officer.
Target of 10 hectare Makhana production in these districts
Under the scheme, a target has been set to produce 10 hectares of makhana in each identified district. With this, Makhana will be cultivated in a total of 180 hectares in the state. This scheme is being implemented in Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Sitapur, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Ballia, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Mirzapur, Bareilly of Uttar Pradesh. Suitable climate and resources are available for the cultivation of Makhana in these districts. Here, the waterlogged conditions in the ponds and low lying areas are favorable for Makhana production.
Makhana crop is ready in 10 months
Makhana is cultivated in a pond or field filled with an average of three feet water. Its nursery is set up in the month of November and it is transplanted after four months (in February-March). The plants start flowering about five months after transplantation. Its harvesting starts in October-November. From nursery till harvesting, it takes a total of 10 months to prepare the crop. Makhana cultivation is even more beneficial for those farmers who already do fish farming in their private ponds.
Demand for Makhana is increasing as a superfood.
Due to being a treasure trove of nutrients, the fame of Makhana is increasing as a superfood. After Corona, awareness among people about health and strengthening the immune system has increased significantly and due to this the demand for Makhana has also increased rapidly. Apart from being low in calories, Makhana is rich in protein, phosphorus, fiber, iron and calcium.
