भारतीय खाद्य निगम (FCI) पंजाब क्षेत्र के मुख्य सामान्य प्रबंधक बी. श्रीनिवासन ने कहा कि अक्टूबर में पुराने भंडार को साफ़ करने के लिए रोज़ाना 15-18 ट्रेनें चलाई गईं और अब तक 8 लाख मीट्रिक टन अनाज उठाया गया है। श्रीनिवासन ने कहा, “अक्टूबर के लिए 13 लाख मीट्रिक टन पुराने भंडार को हटाने का लक्ष्य है। दिसंबर तक हम 40 लाख मीट्रिक टन भंडारण स्थान बनाएंगे और मार्च तक 90 लाख टन। 30 जून तक हम पंजाब से 124 लाख टन चावल की खरीद कर लेंगे। हमारे पास सारी जगह होगी, चिंता करने की कोई जरूरत नहीं।”

The problem of paddy lifting in Punjab may be solved to some extent as the Central Government has approved 22 metric tonnes of paddy storage space in the state. Till now, farmers, brokers and laborers were continuously blaming the central and state governments regarding this problem. Due to lack of storage i.e. warehouse, there is a delay in paddy lifting due to which there is resentment among the farmers and commission agents. But this resentment seems to be reducing somewhat due to the recent decision of the Centre.
Amid protests over non-lift of paddy in Punjab due to storage shortage, the Center on Monday approved a new storage facility of 22 lakh metric tonnes for the state, a newspaper report said. Has been given and Punjab State Warehousing Corporation is going to issue tender for it.
What did the government say?
Speaking to ‘The Tribune’, Union Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Prahlad Joshi said, “We are fully committed to our promise of creating 40 lakh tonnes of storage capacity by December by eliminating the previous food grain stocks lying in covered warehouses in Punjab .” On the slow lifting of grains already lying in open storage in the state, Joshi said, “Removing these stocks from Punjab is our first priority and currently the maximum number of trains are deployed for Punjab.”

Around 130 rakes (special trains) are deployed in Punjab to help clear the previous grain stock. “The trains are there and whenever we get indent to move that stock on the freight business development portal, we move the grain,” said a senior railway ministry official. Daily Tribune reports that the Punjab State Grain Procurement Corporation is also working on a tender to create 9 lakh metric tonnes of new storage space at 30 locations and has received 130 applications for the same. This tender will be finalized by next week.
FCI statement
Food Corporation of India (FCI) Punjab region chief general manager B Srinivasan said that in October, 15-18 trains were run daily to clear the previous stock and so far 8 LMT of grain has been lifted. Srinivasan said, “The target for October is to remove 13 LMT of the previous stock. By December we will create 40 LMT storage space and by March 90 LMT. By June 30, we will have procured the entire 124 lakh tonne rice from Punjab. We will have all the space we need, no need to worry.”

Earlier, Punjab Food Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak had said that only 3-4 LMT rice has been sent out from the state since April. However, FCI said that the movement has been happening since the purchase of last season. FCI officials said the 22 LMT new storage space will reduce the pressure.
