In this context, considering the importance of processing, entrepreneurship and marketing in vegetable cultivation, Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi has started a unique effort to increase the earnings of farmers. Now IIVR Varanasi scientists are visiting farmers’ fields and providing information about high quality plants of hybrid and normal varieties of vegetables.
IIVR Varanasi provided seeds to farmers
Dr. Nagendra Rai, Director of the Indian Vegetable Research Institute, Varanasi, said that under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan, various crops grown by the farmers in Gram Sabha Gauraiya like brinjal varieties Kashi Uttam, Kashi Manohar and Kashi Utsav; Field inspection of chilli Kashi Ratna and turmeric variety Megha-1 was conducted. Whose seeds were earlier made available by the institute under this project.
Farmers’ income will double
Farmers said that the seeds obtained from the institute, Suran variety Gajendra, bottle gourd Kashi Ganga and Nenua variety Kashi Shreya, have yielded very good production, which has resulted in higher profits as compared to the earlier cultivated varieties. Scientists took feedback from farmers about the agricultural materials distributed by the institute.
On this occasion, Principal Scientist, Dr. Tribhuvan Chaubey gave information about the production techniques of chilli and Senior Scientist, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Tiwari gave information about the production and plant protection techniques of brinjal.

Executive Director of the institute, Dr. Nagendra Rai said that the efforts being made to provide high quality plants of hybrid and common varieties of vegetables to the farmers are being successful and the seedlings of vegetable crops prepared from the hi-tech nursery are reaching the farmers of the area. Now such improved varieties of vegetables have been developed, which give yield in the year even before the season.
Institute scientist Dr. Suhas Karkute gave information to the farmers about the control of viral diseases in vegetables and Dr. Rajeev Kumar explained in detail about various methods of irrigation for excellent vegetable production. On this occasion, head of Gauraiya Gram Sabha Dhananjay Mishra and many other farmers were present.
