An elderly farmer from Wayanad, Kerala has achieved a new achievement with his experience and hard work. Farmer Alancheri Balakrishnan is a resident of Kammana in Wayanad. He has developed a new variety of turmeric ‘916’. Which is a big achievement for him. According to The Hindu report, Balakrishnan K said that he allowed the flowers of the plant to bloom and collected about 30 seeds from the mother plant. Later he sowed them, and almost all the seeds germinated. Balakrishnan’s experiment was successful because he achieved a yield of up to one kilogram from a single mother plant, which had the same characteristics as before.
It took 7 years to create turmeric variety
After this success, Balakrishnan demanded formal recognition for his achievement from the Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Protection Authority. However, it took him seven years to develop this turmeric. But then it took him 15 years to get a patent in his name for this. Balakrishnan says that this patent was a big inspiration for him. Currently, Balakrishnan is waiting to get a patent for his newly developed chilli variety Preethi.
