आज महिलाएं देश के विकास में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रही हैं और समाज में बदलाव की नई लहर ला रही हैं। नीलम त्यागी की कहानी उन सभी महिलाओं के लिए प्रेरणा का स्रोत है, जो आत्मनिर्भर बनकर समाज के अन्य लोगों को आर्थिक सशक्तिकरण के रास्ते पर लाना चाहती हैं। नीलम, जो मुरादनगर, गाज़ियाबाद की निवासी हैं, ने न केवल खुद को आर्थिक रूप से मजबूत बनाया है, बल्कि हजारों महिलाओं के भाग्य को बदल दिया है और किसानों को भी आर्थिक तौर पर सशक्त बनाया है।

Neelam Tyagi got married after passing class 12th. Even after coming to her in-laws’ house, she had the passion to do something. For a few years after marriage, she worked as a teacher in a private inter college. Being from a rural area, Neelam was familiar with the problems of village women and dreamed of making herself self-reliant. Neelam thought of forming a self-help group along with some women, when she talked to her in-laws about it, the family opposed it. But with the passion to become self-reliant and progressive thinking, Neelam decided to live separately and realize her dream with the support of her husband. Today, apart from being self-reliant, she has become a heroine for thousands of women and a guru who gives new ideas for the economic progress of farmers.
Supplies 10 tons of vegetables daily
Neelam first contacted a private bank and formed a self-help group of women. He took one acre of land on lease and started cultivating sugarcane and turmeric. The result of his hard work was that he earned an additional income of Rs 1,60,000 in about a year. Seeing this success, other women also got inspired and started joining the self-help group. Neelam, with the help of NABARD, formed more than 300 self-help groups, with which approximately 4,500 women joined.
Neelam inspired the village women to produce vegetables and established direct contact with the urban market. Neelam says that in Hapur, she formed 100 self-help groups of vegetable producing women and registered a federation of 1,500 women. Apart from this, Neelam got the groups of women producing vegetables licensed in Sahibabad Mandi, so that they can earn more profits by selling their products directly.
Neelam got 10 tons of vegetables supplied daily by the women of the group so that the women could get better prices by selling fruits and vegetables directly, which resulted in more profits for them. Apart from this, outlets have also been opened, so that the products manufactured by the self-help groups can be sold directly in the market. Now these women are earning additional income by selling their products in the city. With the inspiration of Neelam, many farmers also started cultivating sugarcane and turmeric, which increased their income. Besides, farmers also supply five tonnes of milk to Parag every day.
Farmers’ income increases with this formula
Neelam stressed on valuation of products to increase the income of farmers. He established a flour mill, in which wheat was purchased from a thousand farmers. Five tonnes of flour and porridge every day was supplied to the market under the name Neel Raj. Along with this, Neelam established a production unit of chilli-spices, millets, multigrain flour, oil, gram flour etc. under the name Nitara, which opened new employment opportunities in rural areas.

Neelam created employment opportunities not only for women but also for the youth of the village. He along with MANAGE Hyderabad started training programs for farming related employment in the village. Youth were trained for enterprises like mushroom production, food processing, goat rearing, and poultry farming and were provided employment opportunities at the local level. Apart from this, Neelam inspired the youth to open farming related shops and also helped them in getting loan from the bank.
Employment with the help of government institutions
Neelam established Lakshmi Jankalyan Seva Sansthan to help the farmers. He established a soil testing laboratory for the farmers by establishing cooperation with the government and other agriculture related companies, which helped the farmers to do farming according to their land. This not only increased production but also reduced costs. Neelam continuously improved her business and herself along with the upliftment of women farmers.
After passing Intermediate in the year 1994, he put education on pause for some time along with his work. He resumed his studies at his in-laws house and after BA, obtained MA degree in Sociology in 2005. This tireless effort of Neelam Tyagi was highly appreciated in the society. He was honored with 11 national awards. “Best Community Mobilizer” Award at Kisan Mela held at Faridabad in 2011 “National Award for Innovation in Agriculture” and “Fellow Farmer Award” at IARI Pusa, New Delhi in 2017.
