The Yobe State government is partnering with the Islamic Development Bank of Saudi Arabia to launch a $1 billion irrigation project aimed at increasing the production of wheat, rice, and vegetables in the state.
In an exclusive interview with Arewa Punch in Damaturu, Yobe State’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Ali Mustafa Goniri, revealed that the bank plans to invest $120 billion in the project to enhance food and cash crop production in the state.
According to Goniri, “The governor of Yobe State is highly interested in this venture, and the government has already promised to provide substantial funding for the project.”
He also mentioned that apart from the lava irrigation project, the state government plans to acquire 5,000 hectares of agricultural land to immediately kickstart additional irrigation activities.
Arewa Punch reported that the lava irrigation project will cover 2,000 hectares, and the government is working on purchasing heavy agricultural machinery, including bulldozers, for land clearing.
