Building on the success of previous years, the third Annual Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Summit East is set to return to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, VA, from October 1-2, 2024.

Danville, VA (October 4, 2024) – The CEA Summit East, based on past successes, took place at the IALR on October 1-2, 2024. Co-hosted by Indoor Ag-Con and the CEA Innovation Center in collaboration with Virginia Tech’s School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, the event attracted nearly 250 participants from 35 U.S. states, as well as Canada, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong. A diverse group of producers, educators, scientists, extension agents, suppliers, technical experts, and government leaders gathered to explore the latest advancements in CEA technology and establish valuable partnerships.

The two-day conference featured a packed agenda, including keynote presentations, panels, breakout sessions, and tours of the CEA Innovation Center facilities. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with 21 tabletop exhibits showcasing cutting-edge innovations and services that shape the future of CEA. In addition, a series of networking opportunities helped foster new connections and strengthen existing partnerships.

The event began with a keynote address by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who is a strong supporter of the indoor agriculture sector. His session was followed by “What is CEA: Its Mission, Definition, and Purpose,” featuring speakers such as Paul Brantlinger, CEO of CropKing, Inc., Jessica Sore, Senior Marketing Director at BrightFarms, Mike Ross, Co-Founder and CEO of Beanstalk, and Dr. Michael Evans of Virginia Tech and the CEA Innovation Center. On the second day, the Leadership Insights panel welcomed John McMahon, Co-Founder and COO of Better Future Farms; Molly Montgomery, Acting CEO and Executive Chair of AeroFarms; Carl Gupton, CEO of Greenswell Growers; and moderator Emily G, a member of the CEA Alliance Board and Marketing Director at AeroFarms. Additionally, a panel titled “Horizon Ahead,” moderated by Kelly Roda, Editorial Director at GIE Media, featured Andrew Brooks, Business Development Manager at Priva; Cody Journal, Founder/CEO of Veg, Inc.; and Maximilian Knight, CEO of Rooted Robotics, discussing emerging trends, technological advancements, and innovations shaping the future of CEA.

Educational Tracks

The CEA Summit included three educational tracks – Production, Business, and Education, Workforce, and Training – covering a wide range of topics including food safety, the economics of CEA, crop selection, aquaponics, energy strategies, management, onboarding training programs for new employees, and building international partnerships. Other panel discussions and 15-minute showcases of CEA industry research provided attendees with insight into the latest research findings and success stories from the industry.

Tabletop Exhibits and Networking

Besides the conference sessions, attendees had ample chances to connect with the 21 tabletop exhibitors during coffee breaks, lunch roundtables, and an afternoon cocktail reception.

Graduate Student Poster Competition

This year’s summit included the second CEA Graduate Student Poster Competition, providing graduate students with a platform to present high-quality CEA-related research, exposing them to commercial companies, and promoting collaboration between academia and the private sector. Eight finalists competed, with Liam Reynolds from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign winning first prize for his poster titled “Evaluation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Irrigated Radish, Broccoli, and Lettuce Microgreens.” Nathaniel King-Smith from Ohio State University received the second prize for his poster, “Searching for Sustainable Alternatives for Key Materials: Hydroponic Cultivation of Rubber Dandelion (T. kok-saghiz) for Rubber Production.”

CEA Innovation Center Tour

The program concluded with group tours of the CEA Innovation Center. Attendees had the unique opportunity to see the hydroponic systems and facilities of the CEA Innovation Center up close, including greenhouses and vertical growing racks, and to learn about some exciting research projects at the center.
