The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation (EWS-KT), and Wageningen University and Research (WUR) have launched the DELIVER Nigeria project aimed at empowering small-scale farmers in Kaduna and Kano states through resilient food systems. The project aims to support the livelihoods of 50,000 farmers in Nigeria.

During the launch of this three-year project, GAIN’s country director, Dr. Michael Ojo, emphasized that the initiative focuses on improving the livelihoods of small farmers and promoting healthy eating habits in Kaduna and Kano states.

He mentioned that the DELIVER Nigeria project is part of the Accelerating Resilient Food Systems in Africa (ARFSA) program, administered by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This project will help transform Nigeria’s vegetable market and address key challenges faced by small farmers, such as low yields, limited market access, high post-harvest losses, and inadequate financing.

Despite some progress in recent years, small farmers in Kaduna and Kano still face numerous challenges, including low productivity, limited market access, high post-harvest losses, and insufficient funding.

He noted that these issues have been exacerbated by climate change and low vegetable consumption in the region, negatively impacting community health and local vegetable market development.

“Through the DELIVER Nigeria project, GAIN, EWS-KT, and WUR aim to address these challenges by empowering 50,000 households and positively impacting millions of consumers. The project will train 25,000 existing small farmers previously supported by EWS-KT in advanced vegetable production and climate-resilient practices, as well as enroll an additional 25,000 new farmers in similar training programs. Furthermore, it will improve financial access for 500 farmers to enhance their operations, promote the consumption of various vegetables, and encourage healthy eating habits through community and market outreach activities.”

He further revealed that the project will also build the capacity of 140 local professionals, including government extension agents, agricultural students, and agricultural input dealers, in crop selection, fertilization, training, pest identification, and disease management.

In his opening remarks, Mukhtar Morovia, commissioner of the Kaduna State Budget and Economic Planning Ministry, representing Permanent Secretary Bashir Muhammad, stated that the project comes at a crucial time when Kaduna state is actively working to address important issues related to food security, rural poverty, and economic development.

He emphasized that the role of the agricultural sector, particularly small farmers, remains a vital component of the country’s economic and social development strategies. It is essential to ensure that these farmers have the right tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive, forming a key part of our approach for sustainable economic growth.

“As the ministry is responsible for efficiently and effectively allocating state resources, we recognize the significant potential of this project to promote economic diversification, especially in rural areas. It has the power to stimulate local economies, create jobs, reduce poverty, and ultimately contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are central to Kaduna state’s development agenda,” he added.

Additionally, Murtala Muhammad, commissioner of the Kaduna State Agriculture Ministry, represented by the Director of Agricultural Services, Begu Dutse, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities the project brings to improve the capacity of extension services, strengthen value chains, and establish sustainable relationships between farmers and markets.

He noted that with the increasing number of extension officers in Kaduna State, the training and capacity-building components of the DELIVER Nigeria project would have a far-reaching impact, benefiting not only farmers but entire communities.
