He called for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased productivity in the industry. He also highlighted what the sector has done to promote this change.

During the summit, he discussed “Circular Value Chains and the Future of Chemicals,” a program that brings together business discussions within the G20, which Brazil is hosting this year, leading up to a summit of heads of state in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19.

“I believe the chemical industry can decarbonize and add value to consumer products. The key [to making this happen] is to become a benchmark in the circular economy,” said Al-Fagih, advocating for increased recycling of plastics and derivatives, as well as promoting emission reductions through more electrification, energy efficiency, and carbon capture and storage.

SABIC and the chemical industry are working to promote reuse

Al-Fagih noted that the chemical industry is already capable of converting 40% of oil from its raw materials into products. Future production units not only have the potential to reduce emissions but also to recover what they have emitted. The most advanced plants could utilize solar energy generated from agricultural land in some areas. However, to achieve this, production units need to be optimized to acquire new energy sources.

The executive emphasized that it is not enough if plastic waste and refuse are not recycled or reused. Al-Fagih mentioned that in addition to investing in the development of recycling infrastructure, the sector is working together to promote the reuse of products created by the chemical industry.

“All of these efforts help reduce sector emissions while promoting material recycling,” Al-Fagih said, who met with CEOs from some of Brazil’s largest manufacturing, fuel, and food companies this week. SABIC and Saudi Aramco are the main sponsors of the B20 event.
