Vienna, October 29, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The OPEC Fund for International Development participated in the 2024 World Bank-IMF annual meeting, signing loan agreements worth nearly half a billion dollars with partner countries. These agreements emphasize the OPEC Fund’s commitment to advancing global development goals, including climate resilience, energy transition, sustainable agriculture, and socio-economic empowerment.

The OPEC Fund President, Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, stated, “The annual meetings provided an important opportunity for the OPEC Fund to engage with key stakeholders and align our efforts to meet our partner countries’ development needs. This year’s meetings proved to be an excellent platform for promoting partnerships and strengthening cooperation. Through new financing agreements, we are taking decisive steps to enhance connectivity, promote economic resilience, and empower communities in our partner countries.”

As a significant step to strengthen cooperation, the OPEC Fund and the World Bank Group signed a co-financing framework agreement (CFA) and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the meetings. These agreements aim to enhance co-financing opportunities. The OPEC Fund’s President Alkhalifa and members of the delegation met with each regional vice president of the World Bank to gain in-depth insights into countries and operational priorities.

New loans from the OPEC Fund to partner countries include:

• Benin: 26 million USD to support a horticultural development aid project aimed at enhancing food security and increasing the income of small-scale horticultural farmers.
• Bhutan: 50 million USD to help develop two hydropower plants, aiming to strengthen Bhutan‘s energy security and renewable energy production.
• Côte d’Ivoire: €60 million program-based loan (PBL) to improve infrastructure in the transportation and energy sectors and boost economic competitiveness.
• Jordan: 100 million USD PBL to support Jordan’s human capital program, aimed at enhancing and safeguarding human capital.
• Oman: 180 million USD as the first installment of 392 million USD to finance the Khasab-Daba-Lima road project to enhance regional connectivity.
• Uzbekistan: 40 million USD loan to Sanat Kurilish Bank (SQB) to support small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the agricultural sector.

The OPEC Fund also signed partnership agreements with supporting institutions, such as Phoneplata and CAF, to enhance cooperation and boost development efforts in the LAC region.
