This challenge is organized by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and funded and initiated by the Seeding the Future Foundation. The Seeding the Future Foundation and IFT are proud to announce that applications for the fourth annual Seeding the Future Global Food System Challenge are now open. This challenge, offering up to $1 million in prizes, is designed to accelerate innovations needed to make food systems more nutritious, regenerative, and equitable.

This challenge, organized by IFT and initiated by Seeding the Future Foundation, has already attracted over 2,400 submissions in its first three years, coming from NGOs, non-profits, social enterprises, universities, research institutions, and teams of scientists, engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs focused on small and emerging for-profit ventures.

Applications will close on January 6, 2025.

To encourage innovation at all levels, from idea generation to development and scaling up, the challenge offers three levels of awards:

Eight Seed Grants ($25,000 each) will be provided to organizations that have created innovative ideas and developed initial proof of concept or prototype that demonstrates the viability and impact of scaling their idea.
Three Development Grants ($100,000 each) will be awarded to organizations that have shown their innovation to be feasible, scalable, and likely to have a significant positive impact on people’s health and the environment with strong economic viability.
Two Seeding the Future Grand Prizes (up to $250,000 each) will be granted to organizations that have created innovations that are economically viable at scale, trusted by consumers, and demonstrate significant potential benefits for people’s lives, health, and the environment.

This year, a new feature allows applicants who pass the first stage of the review process to earn a spot in the Seeding the Future Global Food System Innovation Database and Network. This is a peer-reviewed, dynamic, interactive, and searchable database showcasing challenge applicants and their innovations. The database will be available to global organizations focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme, as well as philanthropic organizations. It will also be available to the investment community to enable funding of innovative organizations according to their investment criteria.

Still in development, the database will enable AI-assisted searches to find innovations or organizations focused on specific food and agriculture issues; Sustainable Development Goals; planetary health factors like greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land use, or biodiversity; as well as application areas such as reducing post-harvest losses, school meal programs, or biofortification. Entries will include the organization’s name, type, website, project title, executive summary, details of the innovation and its benefits, expected scale, and the types of impact on people and the environment, along with areas of focus where support can be provided or received. This feature allows ‘solution seekers’ to connect with ‘solution providers’ to share experiences and accelerate their innovations.
