Politics used to attract Pottinger, who served as president of the Kentucky FFA, an organization he is passionate about. His personality is based on a genuine desire to serve.

However, the selfish nature of modern politics and frustration over ineffective work have cooled his interest in participating in the political arena. He mentioned, “I enjoy meeting people and working with them when we are solving problems. I like policy, but for me to be interested in politics at that level, there needs to be more opportunities for problem-solving.”

Pottinger realized that the country’s governing system is designed to work slowly and doesn’t always resolve every issue.

“We are a country of immigrants with many different ideas, and our founding fathers aimed to create a constitution that was fair and equal for all to keep the nation united.”

He stated, “There is a lot to do in the private sector, and I will continue to work on that.”

Pottinger views this election through the lens of global trade and geopolitics. He said, “Most of what we produce is influenced by global policies, not just domestic ones – especially outside of the farm bill. Migrant workers are crucial for farming, but not specifically for my farm.”

From this global perspective, he considers peace in the Middle East and energy prices to be very important. In his opinion, there is a need to stop and end the war in Ukraine, allowing Russia to let Ukrainians govern themselves and their land.

Pottinger emphasized the need for some stability in the market to allow farmers to plan their budgets. “We need to understand global supply and consumption levels. I believe this is the biggest issue in agriculture right now,” he said.

China is often part of this discussion, but he also highlights India and Mexico. He asked, “What kind of demand will we see for grain in protein production over the next few years, and will the trend decline or increase?”

Earlier this year, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected a long-awaited immigration and foreign aid bill that Pottinger had advocated for, which frustrated him. Pottinger saw it as a real opportunity to address immigration policy.

Regardless of who wins the election, Pottinger ranks trade policies with Mexico and China as top priorities. Biden has maintained tariffs established during the Trump administration but dropped compensatory tariffs for trade wars. He asked, “What kind of support payments will we have, and do we need them? It’s a troubling question, but do we really need to produce that much grain?”

He hopes that rural broadband will see progress over the next four years. He said, “If Starlink can be part of this instead of traditional infrastructure, we need to reallocate support appropriately. We need to find a way to provide broadband access to all communities. We can operate businesses cheaply in rural areas, but we need to be connected.”

A clear energy policy is also on his radar. He expressed, “If the Jones Act isn’t seriously discussed over the next four years, I will lose it.” The Jones Act regulates maritime commerce in the United States and requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be carried on ships built, owned, and operated by U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Pottinger said, “If the act isn’t repealed, commercial trucking and rail need to follow the same rules. This is driving up energy costs and goods costs from the West Coast to the East Coast. It prevents us from meeting our transportation carbon targets because it’s too expensive, and the costs are prohibitive. Without it, I believe we could have more free flow of products, and we could connect California’s energy goals more effectively with Midwestern ethanol policies.”

Dan Leaky from Soda Springs, Idaho, mentioned that crops can be harvested and winter grain seeds can be sown, but the potential for cold weather and snow is pushing them to speed up projects. The agriculture team hopes to break ground on some grassland that has been untouched for the past 30 years before the weather turns bad.

He stated, “We’re shipping durum, spring wheat, and malt barley, trying to fill some contracts before winter sets in. There are always bins to empty, and equipment to prepare before winter hits.”

With dry conditions in mind, winter crops look better than Leaky expected. The good news is they had enough soil moisture to start, and timely rains kept them going. Leaky noted, “Since we started growing it, canola looks the best at this time of year.”

Baranik reported that they can expect late rains nearly every day in Soda Springs. “After Tuesday, they may get a break with some warmer temperatures. However, in the higher elevations, they may struggle to break the cold for a few days. While I don’t see anything significantly different in their DTN forecast right now (until November 1), I wouldn’t be surprised to see some rain again over the weekend (November 9-10),” he added.

This is Leaky’s first year growing winter canola. He planted 60 acres of non-GMO high-erucic acid canola under contract with Purdue Agribusiness, which requires separation from other canola crops.

Leaky mentioned, “This canola did not germinate as well, but now we are seeing a decent harvest as we approach late fall. There are many different stages of growth – some plants are just 2 inches in diameter, while others might be 20 inches, making the progress quite inconsistent. We will see how it holds up through winter. It could be just fine.”

Leaky does not hide his conservative leanings when it comes to politics. He stated, “My governance philosophy supports less government involvement in personal life and business, along with more freedom and free-market policies.”

When translating this into farming, his main concern is that no side seems able to rein in spending. He stated, “Unrealistic profit tax proposals from the left and policies that make it hard to pass on my farm to the next generation really worry me.”

Policies from the right are better, but he is concerned about Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his potential involvement in Trump’s cabinet. Leaky said, “He has many good ideas, but I’m worried about his anti-agriculture feelings and the potential restrictions we may see regarding pesticides and technology due to his influence.”

“Trump likes tariffs. I remember how China’s tariffs affected agriculture prices, and that worries me. He is not wrong in arguing that we need them, and yes, we are being taken advantage of… but correcting the trade policies of the past 25 years is a painful process, and it’s hard to reach that point,” he noted.

“I believe we need security for farmers, but I would like to see less government involvement and subsidies. I want to see very little waste in the farm bill. A lot of resources go to other interests and get reallocated, but no side has really addressed this,” Leaky stated.

Leaky is certain of one thing: regardless of the election outcome, the country needs to come together. He has been disturbed by the name-calling and division during this election, seeing no promotion of unity under the current administration.

However, he acknowledged that tension between different political views is not new. Hatred and poor campaigning have come and gone throughout history.

“This country needs to come together, and I would love to see a farmer run for an office who does not disclose their political affiliation or has none. My dream is to see someone who would create policies for the public good and allow the public to make decisions,” Leaky expressed.

He added, “I also know that if the election doesn’t go the way I want, I will be fine. One thing I’ve learned in life is that we cannot control the wind, but we can adjust the sails. If the wind is taking us south and we want to go north, it controls us. Complaining about how the wind will change one day is not the answer. We must steer our own boat and do what we can to navigate whichever environment we find ourselves in.”

“We do what we can with what we have. I have succeeded under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Sometimes it just means adjusting our business and preparing for potentially tough times, but we will be fine as long as regulations and trade restrictions aren’t too burdensome,” he concluded.
