“नेकार्टल सिंचाई परियोजना चरण 1 का विकास 90 000m3 की क्षमता वाले नवनिर्मित पास के संतुलन बांध से पानी का दोहन करके गुरुत्वाकर्षण-आधारित प्रणाली का उपयोग करता है।

संतुलन बांध को नेकार्टल बांध द्वारा एक पंपिंग प्रणाली के माध्यम से 1,000 मिमी-व्यास पाइप के माध्यम से खिलाया जाता है।

“कुछ कठिनाइयाँ हैं, लेकिन परियोजना इतनी महत्वपूर्ण है कि उन कठिनाइयों के कारण इसे ख़तरे में नहीं डाला जा सकता।

हम इस परियोजना को आगे बढ़ाने, भूमि अधिग्रहण करने और बांध के दूसरे चरण को अंतिम रूप देने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध हैं, ”मंत्री ने कहा।

उन्होंने कहा कि कीटमैनशूप का आकार दोगुना होने की उम्मीद है और उन्होंने हितधारकों और कीटमैनशूप नगर पालिका से आवास, थोक बुनियादी ढांचे, बिजली, सड़कों, अस्पतालों और स्कूलों के लिए शहर की योजना और बजट पर विचार करने का आग्रह किया।

Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform Minister Calle Schlettwein revealed this information during the Khatmanisup Agricultural, Industrial, and Tourism Expo last week.

He stated that the project is anticipated to attract between 33,000 to 40,000 people.

Schlettwein mentioned that the ministry is in the advanced stages of acquiring technical experts to build irrigation systems at the agricultural level, with plans to bring these consultants on board starting next year.

Meanwhile, the ministry has split the development of the irrigation project into two phases due to water scarcity, allowing for the construction of a balance dam.

The first phase of the Nekartal Irrigation Project will utilize water from a newly constructed balance dam with a capacity of 90,000 m3, using a gravity-based system.

The balance dam is fed by the Nekartal dam through a pumping system using a 1,000 mm diameter pipe.

“The dam was constructed as part of the second phase of the Nout Dam Project, specifically to provide additional water supply for irrigation. Water scarcity is the most significant barrier to agricultural development across Namibia. Therefore, the ministry has developed the Nekartal Irrigation Project in two phases, which will ultimately cover 5,000 hectares of irrigated land,” Schlettwein said.

He indicated that the first phase will primarily focus on farms near the balance dam, which will encompass a total area of approximately 10,064 hectares, with 2,000 hectares designated for irrigation development.

Schlettwein noted that phase two is being developed within the framework of the Green Plan policy and objectives.

Out of the 5,000 hectares required for agricultural production, only 3,800 hectares have been acquired so far, and efforts are ongoing to secure the remaining 1,200 hectares.

“We have made some progress so far.

A total acquisition of approximately 12,000 hectares of land is necessary. Of that 12,000 hectares, 5,000 hectares are deemed suitable for irrigation. The other 7,000 hectares are not meant for irrigation but for feedlotting and other related purposes.

“Of the 5,000 hectares of land we have purchased, 3,800 hectares are secured, and 1,200 hectares are still in the acquisition process.

“There are some challenges, but the project is so important that it cannot be jeopardized by these difficulties.

We are committed to moving this project forward, acquiring land, and finalizing the second phase of the dam,” the minister stated.

He expressed hope that the size of Khatmanisup will double, urging stakeholders and the Khatmanisup municipality to consider the city’s planning and budget for housing, bulk infrastructure, electricity, roads, hospitals, and schools.

“If we don’t have people here, the Nekartal will not work. Therefore, we need to put our hats together. Let’s develop this together… It’s a complex issue, but it needs immediate attention,” he said.

The Khatmanisup Agricultural, Industrial, and Tourism Expo was held under the theme ‘Inclusive Economic Development through Tourism and Green Investment.’
