However, this didn’t happen mainly due to difficulties between acclaimed director Mathieu Kassovitz and the distributor, 20th Century Fox. Audiences left the film frustrated and bewildered.

Action hero Diesel plays the role of Toorop, a professional smuggler who is trapped in a dystopian Asia and is hired to transport a young woman, Aurora (played by Mélanie Thierry), to the USA with her guardian, Sister Rebecca (Yeoh). In return, he will receive a clear passport and a good amount of money to return home. The film’s disastrous reputation stems from a plot that falters right from the start and a director who openly rejected a film plagued by problems from day one.

The Disastrous Production of Babylon A.D.

French director and actor Kassovitz gained global recognition for his 1990s hit film La Haine, which follows three young men in a Jewish neighborhood of Paris over 24 hours. He also attracted attention on screen for his quirky romance role in 2001’s Amélie. When Kassovitz decided to adapt Babylon A.D. based on the novel Babylon’s Children by Maurice G. Dantec, expectations were high. The novel tackles powerful religious and philosophical themes that Kassovitz was eager to translate to film.

Kassovitz spent almost five years developing the script and seeking funding before finally getting support from StudioCanal, along with contributions from his own production company and Diesel’s. 20th Century Fox took it on, and everything seemed set. However, Kassovitz, being a writer with a personal connection to the project, found Fox to be overly involved in the production. They sent lawyers to set and strictly monitored everything. Kassovitz later told AMC TV:

I was never allowed to shoot a scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script was not respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience […] I should have chosen a studio with guts. Fox was just trying to make a PG-13 movie. I was ready to go to war with them, but I couldn’t because they didn’t care […] I had something better on my hands but wasn’t allowed to work with it.

Thus, the production of Babylon A.D., as Kassovitz expressed, strayed from its original intent and veered into “pure violence and foolishness.” The director further stated, “The goal of all the action scenes was to be motivated by the characters’ spiritual perspectives or experiences […] Instead, parts of the film feel like a bad episode of 24.

Reports of Kassovitz delaying production for personal reasons and rumors of tension between Diesel and Kassovitz didn’t help the situation. More controversy arose when editors cut 15 minutes from the film, although there were rumors that it was more. The film was rated PG-13, leading to speculation that the entire project had deteriorated. Ultimately, Kassovitz completely rejected this project and ran a negative campaign against it during its release, as indicated by the quotes above.

Babylon A.D. Bombed with Audiences and Critics Alike

Babylon A.D. faced immediate negative comparisons to the recently released Children of Men, which also took place in a dystopian future where a disillusioned former soldier protects a young woman who has experienced a miraculous conception – quite similar indeed. Here, Toorop’s task is to transport the young girl Aurora to a Russian gangster who wants to use her to create a genetically modified savior, setting the film apart from others. Audiences follow this pair on their dangerous journey around the world.

Somewhere within, a great film is struggling to emerge. Ingredients include a sci-fi story packed with world-building, a dystopian setting, and Diesel’s action scenes. However, the final product leaves unanswered questions: How did the world reach such a perilous state? Why was Aurora so special? Was it her mental powers or technological enhancement as a fetus? Add unrelated scenes mixed in, such as the car chase at the end of the movie, and it feels more like a muddled war film.

Babylon A.D. fails to tie up loose ends, starts strong, but ends in a chaotic and disconnected fashion, leaving the book’s poignant message unexpressed. Kassovitz was so disturbed by the loss of focus in the story that he inserted a lot of material in the editing. The film was not screened for critics before its theatrical release, a clear red flag. Two endings were prepared: the theatrical release plays it safe, with Aurora giving birth to twins and staying with Toorop. In the extended cut, Aurora dies after giving birth, true to Maurice G. Dantec’s book, leaving Toorop to raise the children.

Is Babylon A.D. Worth Watching?

Some action fans claim that there are still entertaining moments in Babylon A.D., particularly when Toorop flies over Russia in a car lifted by a helicopter or when he speeds away on a snowmobile while being chased. Nevertheless, the film (both versions) remains a mess and will likely disappoint most viewers. However, this experience did not hinder Diesel, who became perhaps more famous and successful because of the Fast and Furious franchise.

Meanwhile, Kassovitz shifted his focus away from directing and towards acting. He directed a French film in 2011 that did not perform well at the box office and has not directed another film since. It’s safe to say that Mathieu Kassovitz never worked with 20th Century Fox again.
