Eighth grade students will be the first to join a new program starting next fall, aimed at preparing them for the workforce, military, or college.

Cedar Rapids – Three informational meetings next month will be open for families of current eighth graders in the Cedar Rapids Community School District to learn more about the new College and Career Pathways program beginning next fall.

The district is transitioning to a new College and Career Pathways program—starting with Freshman Academies, aimed at enhancing opportunities for students to engage in college and career preparatory courses while developing transferable skills for the workforce, military, or college.

These pathways will provide students with a “supportive, focused learning environment” where they can earn college credit or industry-recognized certifications.

The informational meetings are designed for middle school students, parents, and guardians who will be directly impacted by these changes, but everyone is welcome to learn about and participate in the College and Career Pathways model.

The meetings will include information about Freshman Academies, how this approach prepares students for success, and scheduling and class offerings.

Current students in grades 9-12 will continue within the existing academic structure.

What are College and Career Pathways?

Under the plan, each Cedar Rapids high school will have its own identified pathways and academies. When students enter their sophomore year, they will have an opportunity to select from pathways starting in 2026 at Washington, Jefferson, Kennedy, or Metro High Schools.

The pathways at Washington High School will include Medical Science, Business and Media, and Engineering and Technology.

Jefferson High School’s pathways will focus on Law and Human Services, Aviation and Engineering, and Environmental Science and Sustainability.

Kennedy High School will have the School of Liberal Arts pathways, which will include:

Metro High School will feature the School of Health and Hospitality with academies in Food Science and Urban Agriculture, Hospitality and Business, and Medical Laboratory Science.

Students will complete a three-course progression in a specific college and career-related pathway and earn college and career-recognized credentials. Regardless of which school high school students attend, they will still have access to opportunities in world languages and fine and performing arts.

Advanced placement classes and dual enrollment in college courses will continue to be offered at each high school.

Last month, Cedar Rapids school district was awarded nearly $15 million to support its pathways programs through the U.S. Department of Education’s Magnet Schools Assistance Program, with school leaders stating that graduates will be better prepared for higher-paying, higher-skill and in-demand careers.
