This partnership, initiated by Corporal Ralph Colasa, provides inmates with a sense of hope and purpose while allowing them to earn college credits as they await release. The class is an opportunity to teach inmates practical skills along with valuable life lesson skills they can use after their release.
Colasa stated, “This initiative allows students to learn basic life skills when their sentence is over. They did all the work; we just provided the supplies.”

The 13-credit, 8-week course on sustainable urban agriculture, developed in collaboration with Hops Garden, provides inmates with hands-on experience in growing and planting various crops. The garden offers a fresh environment where inmates participate in class and experiment with different methods of farming.
Colasa explained, “This is an opportunity for students to find a therapeutic environment. Many people do not have this chance here, so it’s great to offer it to them.”
The goal of sustainable agriculture is to meet society’s food and farming needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Examples of sustainable practices include crop rotation, pest management, soil health management, and climate resilience.
A short documentary produced by the college’s multimedia services department describes the learning processes behind growing and maintaining the garden in the jail.
COD horticulture instructor Connie Kolmeier sees the positive impact of the course on her students.
“Gardening is a natural producer of serotonin,” she said. “For many of my students, this is the first time they have had the opportunity to work in this environment.”
Any food grown at Hops Garden that isn’t used in the jail is donated to food banks in the DuPage area. In addition to growing food plants, many class lessons focus on basic garden maintenance and plant care. Students learn to grow and maintain a variety of fruits and vegetables, and they even get to taste some of the final products when possible.
Kolmeier hopes that the skills learned in class will help her students prepare for life beyond the walls of the jail, and student Gilbert Lopez shares this sentiment.
He said, “With anything in life, you have to be patient. Sometimes it feels like society has abandoned us. But it’s great to offer guidance to others and work on something that gives back.”
