WSSA President Greg Dahl states, “Everyone dedicated to weed management on public and private lands should consider participating in a regional meeting and becoming a member.” He adds, “This is the perfect time for weed science researchers, educators, and extension outreach professionals to come together, compare their challenges and successes in weed management, and share what works and what doesn’t in the field.”

North Central Weed Science Society – December 9-12, 2024, Kansas City, Missouri
The first regional meeting will be the 79th Annual Meeting of the North Central Weed Science Society (NCWSS), taking place from December 9-12 at the Westin Kansas City Hotel in Crown Center, Kansas City, Missouri. More than 100 graduate and undergraduate students will present their latest weed management research in poster and oral competitions, showcasing findings from the North Central U.S. and Ontario, Canada. Additionally, there will be 80 presentations by industry, government, and academic researchers.

Three workshops will be held: 1) A panel of local farmers and advisors discussing their experiences with weed management challenges and solutions; 2) What’s new in extension, highlighting educational activities of university extension weed scientists across the North Central U.S.; and 3) Creating new systems for managing weeds – a retroactive look at Don Weiss’s career, challenging attendees to think about systemic changes that could enhance our ability to manage weeds.

The 78th meeting of the Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS) will take place from January 20-23, 2025, at the Charleston Marriott in Charleston, South Carolina. The program is shaping up to align with the meeting theme of “Celebrating Our History While Preparing for the Future.” Dr. David Shields, a distinguished professor in Carolina, will discuss the history and impact of agriculture in the Charleston area. Additionally, Dr. Tony Bird and Dr. Stanley Culpepper will provide an overview of the new herbicide strategy under the Endangered Species Act from the Environmental Protection Agency.
