Dozens of environmental campaigners are urging the government to support farmers and address the “broken” state of agriculture in England.

Groups like the Wildlife Trust and WWF have signed a letter to Environment Secretary Steve Reed, expressing concerns about unfair supply chains and funding for nature-friendly farming.

Due to ongoing anger over proposed changes to inheritance tax rules on agricultural property and land, thousands of farmers are expected to protest in Parliament on Wednesday.

Recent extreme weather has also contributed to one of the worst crop yields on record across the UK.

The campaigners stated that the proposed tax changes could become a political flashpoint for a sector already facing deep challenges. They noted, “Farmers feel undervalued, overburdened, and incapable of adopting nature-friendly farming practices. This should concern us all,” in a letter sent on Monday.

“We must address the root causes, from an unfair food system to insufficient investment in nature-friendly farming.”

The letter raised concerns about the imbalanced power dynamics in supply chains, favoring major retailers while limiting farmers’ bargaining power.

Campaigners highlighted that farmers often earn less than 1p for every pound consumers spend, with unfair contracts and supermarket pressure hindering their ability to invest in nature-friendly practices.

They also pointed out that underfunded Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMs)—which replaced older EU subsidies with payments based on nature-friendly farming practices—had jeopardized a “shared vision for a sustainable future in farming.”

They emphasized the need for better resources and targeted subsidies, calling for sufficient funding to support sustainable farming while referencing the stagnation in capital grants and design flaws in the ELMs program.

In the budget, the government maintained agricultural spending at current levels for the next two years, totaling £2.4 billion for 2024/25 and 2025/26, which is £200 million less than previous years.

The letter warned, “Without decisive investment and a clear delivery plan, farmers risk being caught between lack of market access and insufficient support for sustainable change.”

Richard Benwell, CEO of Wildlife and Countryside Link, said: “With so much at stake for farmers and the environment, the government has a chance to make things right.”

The Prime Minister should promise public funding necessary to develop a green and prosperous agricultural economy that can reverse nature’s decline and provide security and stability for farming communities.

Vicky Herd, the strategic lead for agriculture at the Wildlife Trusts, said, “Without these changes, we will see further declines in wildlife, soil loss, increased water pollution, and unmanageable flooding.”

Angela Francis, policy director at WWF, stated, “British farmers must be at the center of serious actions on nature, climate, and sustainable food production. Yet, farmers often feel they are being asked to bear the burdens of a broken system.”

The letter’s signatories included representatives from nearly 50 groups, such as RSPB, Greenpeace, Soil Association, Real Farming Trust, Landworkers’ Alliance, Pesticides Action Network, River Action, People’s Trust for Endangered Species, Compassion in World Farming, RSPCA, and Plantlife.

A spokesperson from the Environment Department (DEFRA) stated, “We are firmly committed to the agriculture sector, investing £5 billion through the agricultural budget over two years—the largest amount in our country’s history for sustainable food production and nature restoration.”

“We now have over 60,000 active agreements for our environmental land management schemes and will continue to develop and improve them to support farmers, sustainable food production, and nature restoration.”
