Old, inefficient diesel rice mills were scattered around, but despite piles of rice paddy on the roads, these mills weren’t in use. My local technician guide explained that rising fuel prices due to subsidy removals and currency depreciation made it too expensive to operate them. Although there were affordable electric options available, local processors were unaware of them. Additionally, they had neither the income to invest in new mills nor access to loans, which could cost ten times their monthly income. Consequently, they continued relying on outdated mills that produced low-quality rice not suitable for most urban markets.
Sachi Enku is one of about 200 communities electrified with solar mini-grids by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) since 2017. Its residents are among many rural farmers in Nigeria who have limited access to modern agricultural tools. The Energizing Agriculture Program (EAP) has identified supporters missing in this access: equipment suppliers for rural supply chains, financiers who can offer affordable microloans to the unbanked, and local technicians who can provide maintenance services.
