Traders from South Sudan, in collaboration with their counterparts from Uganda and Congo, have submitted a petition to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to continuously address cross-border trade issues.
The petition was presented to EALA Speaker Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, highlighting several obstacles affecting trade between the three countries.
Among the issues raised during the petition was the poor road network connecting South Sudan, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which traders mentioned hinders the smooth flow of goods and services.
They also pointed out the high telecommunications costs that increase operational costs and hinder effective communication among traders.
Additionally, they raised concerns about customs delays caused by border harassment and bureaucratic obstacles, which discourage cross-border trade.
The traders are urging EALA to intervene and work on removing these barriers to promote regional economic integration.
Natalia Namaku Jackson, president of the South Sudan Students’ Union in Uganda, who attended the petition presentation, stated that immigration officials are particularly harassing South Sudanese students.
“They always tell us we are not allowed to bring any food or juice into Uganda. Whenever we, as students, try to explain that we need to bring these items back to our dormitory, they insist we pay a fee,” she explained.
Ugandan MP Luttamaguzi Semakula called for members to discuss issues affecting trade among EAC partner states.
Trade between partner countries in East Africa faces numerous challenges as they open their markets.

“Some countries do not respect our EAC cooperation, so they keep asking citizens about their age to issue visas, and yet when you are an operational member, this is an area you agree upon,” said EALA member Jacqueline Amongin from Uganda.
