Rice samples were rejected
26 samples of fortified rice have been collected from warehouses and fair price shops in Hubli (Karnataka) by teams sent by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Of these, four samples have been declared ‘beyond rejection limit’. The ministry had asked for replacement of these stocks from which (rejected) samples were taken. 7,304 bags (3,568.837 quintals) of rice were sent from Nabha to Hubli, while 2,995 bags (1,484.929 quintals) of rice were sent from Bhogpur in Jalandhar district. At the same time, Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials in Patiala and Jalandhar divisions have also been informed about this and asked to replace the pile of rice whose samples were rejected due to excessive damage.

Resentment among farmers and mill owners
The rejection of rice grown and purchased in Punjab has increased the resentment of rice mill owners and farmers in the state. They suspect some conspiracy behind the sudden rejection of Punjab’s rice.
On this matter, Kirti Kisan Union Vice President Rajinder Singh Deepsinghwala said that he fears that rice samples from Punjab are being deliberately rejected on the basis of quality, so that Punjabi farmers can be prevented from growing rice. He said that it seems that public opinion is being formed against the rice sent from Punjab because the central government’s stocks are full.
Fear of ban on sales among mill owners
He alleged that this is related to farmers being forced to stay in the mandis for several days amid slow procurement of paddy this year. It seems that the Center wants to involve corporate people in paddy procurement. Rice mill owners have also expressed apprehension that in view of the rejection of rice samples, FCI will stop the movement of rice from Punjab until the quality of all rice in the state is checked. B Srinivasan, regional general manager, FCI Punjab region, said there are no instructions to check the quality of all stocks in Punjab. He also assured that the movement of rice will continue.
