Rome – The World Food Forum (WFF) Global Youth Forum at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has kicked off a week of activities dedicated to youth-led solutions and actions for transforming agricultural food systems under the theme “Good Food for All, Today and Tomorrow.” This event brings together young leaders, innovators, and change-makers from around the world at the FAO headquarters, reinforcing the vital role youth play in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive food future.

During the opening ceremony, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu emphasized the need for youth participation: “Youth perspectives and actions are not only a top priority; they are essential for the future of our global food cultures within agricultural food systems.” He urged the young leaders present to “speak up and be heard,” highlighting that their voices are necessary for driving change. He noted the progress made, stating, “In just four short years, the World Food Forum has become a global movement, bringing together thousands of passionate individuals seeking to make a difference.”

The Global Youth Forum, running from October 14 to 18, will bring together the next generation of students, farmers, scientists, and entrepreneurs to discuss and implement changes at both local and global levels. Participants can take part in workshops, award ceremonies, events, and roundtable discussions designed to foster networking, connect with industry leaders, and gain tools needed to tackle today’s challenges related to food insecurity and climate change.

The opening ceremony included a panel discussion on the importance of youth engagement and empowerment in transforming agricultural food systems. Notable contributors included Linkham Doungsavan, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos PDR; Felipe Paulier, Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs at the UN Youth Office; Jurian Middlehof, Dutch Ambassador for Youth, Education, and Work; Mariana Montes Moreno, head of International Affairs and Cooperation for the Office of the First Lady of El Salvador; Leyla Hasanova, COP29 Youth Climate Champion; and Endile Manguni, member of the WFF Youth Policy Board.

Youth Empowerment and Cultural Exchange: The Path to Change

The forum will feature four thematic programs: Youth Assembly, Youth Innovation Lab, Local Youth Action, Youth Education, and Youth Culture, alongside local youth actions, with the WFF launching up to 11 new national chapters to have a local impact.

The Youth Assembly is a year-round platform by WFF for structured youth participation in agricultural food governance, hosting policy sessions and roundtable discussions addressing key thematic and regional priorities. Here, youth can discuss local priorities and challenges and identify actionable solutions for a better food future.

The WFF Youth Innovation Lab will include hands-on competitions for students and young professionals, such as the Startup Innovation Awards, aimed at promoting technologies and innovations that benefit our planet, as well as the Transformative Research Challenge focused on innovative research ideas to help transform agricultural food systems. It will also expand WFF’s reach with the Youth Food Lab in new areas around the world.

The WFF School Assembly, part of the education program, aims to inspire children and youth by inviting students from around the world to connect with international leaders and youth activists about the importance of good food for all. Meanwhile, the Youth Culture program will feature gastronomy, arts, music, and film to enhance communication among cultures, including activities like the Film Festival and cooking demonstrations to bridge the gap between policy, youth advocacy, and actionable solutions.

An inspiring performance was presented at the ceremony by a talented artist from Zimbabwe, Mpiva, who captivated the audience with a powerful presence and collaborated on a cultural segment with Indian poet Parneet Kaur, who advocates for sustainability and gender equality.

In 2024, the WFF aims to unite individuals globally through diverse events, targeted investments, and innovations to strategically transform agricultural food systems. Launched in 2021, WFF has become a leading platform for promoting solutions to immediate challenges and encouraging youth participation in agricultural and food issues. The theme “Good Food for All, Today and Tomorrow” calls for better production, nutrition, and quality of life for all, encouraging people of all ages to engage in creating a healthy planet and brighter future.
