On October 2nd, Wilmington College had the opportunity to host the second annual Night for Young Professionals, sponsored by the Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio soybean farmers. Students who attended were able to network with industry professionals, get a free headshot, and have their resumes reviewed.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many individuals. Among them were agricultural students Brian Bishop, Alyssa Pringle, Blaine Ferguson, and Shelby Snook, as well as advisors Casey Kelly and Chad Mackey from the Tomorrow Club, along with support from the Ohio Ag Net team.
Kelly expressed gratitude, saying, “We are very thankful for the sponsors who invested in our program and for the opportunity to provide this unique experience to prepare our students for the next steps in their professional careers.” He added, “As we introduced the Tomorrow group of agricultural communicators on campus, it offered students hands-on program planning and coordination experience guided by professionals. Connecting with industry experts and learning is truly everything.”
City BBQ provided the food for the event. The organizers were also grateful for the nearly 90 students who were eager to learn about opportunities beyond college. Julia Brown, the communications director for the Ohio Soybean Council, was present and emphasized the importance of preparing smart and talented students to enter every field of agriculture. The keynote speaker was Philip Farmer, Chief Innovation Officer at Tennessee Farmers Cooperative, who stressed the significance of networking and setting oneself apart from others.
Students had the chance to sit in on a discussion panel led by Farmer, focusing on job opportunities in college, interview tips, and the importance of internships. Panel members included Alyssa Armstrong, Marketing Communications Manager at Seed Consultants; Kevin Wendt, CEO of The Wendt Group; and Lori Kuller, owner of AgHires.
Wendt offered advice that resonated with many students.
“The windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror,” he said, meaning to keep looking forward as you pursue your goals, but also remember how far you’ve come and the challenges you’ve overcome to get there.
After the discussion panel, students participated in various breakout sessions. One session was led by Kuller and Taylor Embree, a recruiter and Collegiate Engagement Manager at AgHires, who shared tips for success in job interviews.
Another breakout session was led by Marlene Eick, Senior Director of Leadership Development at the Ohio Farm Bureau. Her session was titled “Confidence and Credibility as a Leader: Tips for Looking and Feeling Like a Professional.”
The night concluded with the distribution of several prizes, including a MacBook laptop. This event provided a great networking opportunity for Wilmington College students and made an impact on the next generation of agriculturalists and young professionals.
