In a significant move to strengthen Bangladesh’s agricultural sector and export capabilities, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with leading agricultural and food associations on Saturday.
This initiative, jointly organized by BAU and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to establish a research center for climate-smart agriculture, which will promote exports and ensure safe food for local consumers.
The MOU was signed after a workshop held at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the city.
BAU signed the MOU with three organizations: the Bangladesh Agro Processors Association, the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation, and Isphani Agro Limited.
This MOU will pave the way for the development of the Bangladesh Instrumentation Center for Climate Change and Agricultural Research (BICAR) at BAU under the Strengthening Tertiary Education Project (STEP).
The ambitious project is expected to be funded by ADB and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the Export-Import Bank of Korea, aimed at enhancing the tertiary agricultural education response to industry needs.
BICAR will also manage important laboratory tests conducted abroad, allowing local traders to benefit from quicker and more cost-effective testing.
Rayotaro Hayashi, a senior economist from ADB, delivered the welcome address, and Dr. Harunur Rashid from BAU presented the goals of STEP.
BAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Huque Bhuiyan, and Professor ASM Golam Hafez, the director of planning and development at BAU, highlighted the importance of such partnerships for sustainable agricultural development and resilience.
Professor Dr. MD Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan, the focal point for STEP at BAU, facilitated a panel discussion that included leaders from the Bangladesh Agro-Processors Association (BAPA), the Bangladesh Shrimp Foundation, Isphani Agro Limited, and others.
Fauzia Yasmeen discussed Isphani’s work across the agricultural value chain, from seeds to bio-pesticides and food processing.
She advocated for increased investment in bio-pesticides, climate-smart agriculture, and value chain enhancement.
She emphasized the need for training and capacity building for farmers, distributors, and stakeholders, stating, “We need policy-level support to expand sustainable agricultural practices and to introduce farmers to climate-resilient crops and bio-friendly inputs.”
