Iowa, USA: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged African countries and their global partners to make strategic investments and increase collaboration in Africa’s agricultural sector to contribute to global food security.

She made this call during her participation in the Norman E. Borlaug International Food Dialogue held by the World Food Foundation in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

This platform, established in honor of Nobel laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, known as the “father of the Green Revolution,” aims to promote collaboration and innovation to address global food security issues while highlighting the importance of agriculture in achieving sustainable development.

The discussions at the event highlighted the major agricultural challenges facing Africa and explored potential solutions in partnership with American stakeholders. Key agricultural players from the U.S. expressed their desire to collaborate with African countries, emphasizing the benefits of agricultural technology and expertise to boost food production across the continent.

In her remarks, President Samia noted that Tanzania’s investment in agriculture aims not only to address food security within the country but also to contribute to solutions for food challenges that affect Africa and the world at large.

She stated, “Our efforts in agriculture are directed towards solving local and global food shortages,” adding that Tanzania’s fertile land, strategic policies, and dedicated workforce make it a key location for agricultural investment.

She emphasized the need for modern agriculture to enhance food security.

President Samia invited investors to focus on improving the agricultural value chain, from production and processing to market access.

The dialogue provided African leaders and other stakeholders an opportunity to discuss shared challenges such as environmental degradation, water scarcity, and the impact of climate change on agriculture.

Outside of the meetings, President Samia discussed investment opportunities in Tanzania and strengthening the agricultural value chain with U.S. government officials and private sector leaders in agriculture.

The Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue is an annual event that brings together leaders, experts, dignitaries, and policymakers specifically in agriculture, nutrition, and resource management. The discussion aims to address global food security challenges, especially those exacerbated by climate change.

President Samia is one of four African presidents honored to contribute to this year’s dialogue, themed “Seeds of Opportunity: Connecting Generations and Building Diplomacy.” Other participating leaders are from Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and Nigeria.

On Thursday, President Samia confirmed Tanzania’s ongoing progress towards becoming the food basket for East and Southern Africa. Speaking at the Africa Agriculture Dialogue, she shared transformative goals inspired by her experiences in Dakar.

She said, “We are not there yet, but I assure you we are on the right path.” She indicated that Tanzania had made progress in response to recommendations from Dakar.

She outlined three main areas of focus: making Tanzania food self-sufficient, reducing post-harvest losses, and establishing Tanzania as the food basket for the region.

Regarding the institutions being established, she mentioned that it was necessary to form a Presidential Advisory Council on Agriculture during the Dakar summit.

“Yes, and I did exactly that. And we have it. It is successfully advising the government on how to implement Tanzania’s impact on food distribution and food security,” President Samia said.
