Burbank, SD (KTIIV) – Blue Tin Ranch in Burbank, SD has become a unique venue highlighting agritourism.
Thirty-two years ago, Noreen Jorgensen moved to this property in the Missouri River Valley. It is home to the Blue Tin Ranch and the ‘1909 Barn,’ which was brought to the site in 2005.
Jorgensen mentioned, “We are kind of a landmark when people say, ‘Well, when you pass the fields with all the blue roofs, you’re about a mile from town.’
In 2020, she began transforming the property into an agritourism venue to attract more visitors to southeastern South Dakota through AirBnB, host weddings, and offer camping spots for travelers.
She manages the property, which is owned by her daughters, and says that her family has a long farming heritage, with many generations farming in the area.
“We’re proud of South Dakota. We’re proud of tourism. Jorgensen stated, “We just love having people come and experience the farm.”
A workshop called ‘Agritourism and Adventure Travel Workshop’ was organized by SDSU Extension, Travel South Dakota, and Nebraska Tourism.
On Thursday morning, 60 people attended the event at Blue Tin Ranch.
Kara Harders, a community vitality field specialist at SDSU Extension, explained that agritourism is a branch of tourism focused on engaging people and showing them what agriculture looks like in various regions, especially with the growing interest in farm-to-table practices.
Harders noted that her department has been planning this travel workshop for over a year and aims to bring people together to see other agritourism ventures.
“One of the best things about spending two days on this tour is that you get a good idea of how different businesses operate and how you could apply those ideas to your own,” Harders said.
Jorgensen, a farmer’s daughter, took charge of the conversation about who would work the farm in the future. This led her to the idea of turning her land into an agritourism destination to create a legacy.
Harders mentioned that for families with a farming legacy, it’s a common discussion, as children often say, “Maybe I don’t want to be a farmer.” Then the question arises, “What do we do with this land that we love so much?” Families must think outside the box. The Blue Tin Ranch has found a way to use their land and operations to serve their family’s future better.
Jorgensen transformed her family’s agricultural land into a thriving agritourism hotspot, but it came with some challenges.
After running her business for a few years, she faced challenges from Union County.
Jorgensen explained, “At the county level, I am out of the agricultural zone. The county didn’t really want me to host events here. I asked the county to write an ordinance in Union County Planning and Zoning to allow agricultural-themed event centers.”
This ordinance will require some changes to the main buildings before hosting indoor events.
These changes include fixing broken doors in the old barn and removing outdated stairs.
Jorgensen said, “Bringing the barn built in 1909 up to standards today is a little tricky.” She added, “We are in the process of doing that, and we’ll work on the large shed too.”
Tourism has changed her life as she hopes to bring more people to this part of South Dakota.
Jorgensen stated, “Living here, working here, raising your family here— you feel somewhat isolated from the outside world. Agritourism invites people into your farm.”
Next, they plan to add a new pavilion on the property.
The workshop tour also stopped at Valant Vineyards in Clay County, Amazing Acres in Yankton County, and Good Earth Farm in Lincoln County.
As for Jorgensen, she hopes to offer more outdoor events at Blue Tin Ranch as she continues her renovations in line with the new zoning standards.
