The Doraes Agricultural Show and SME Expo have empowered women farmers in the Okombahé community and surrounding areas.
This year, for the first time, eight farmers participated in the agricultural show held in the Doraes constituency of the Erongo region.
One of the participants was Lindina Silas, one of only two women farmers at the event, who won four awards.
Based in Tubusis, Silas raises goats and sheep in dry weather conditions. She emphasized that the show provided women a platform to learn new ways to breed high-quality animals despite challenging circumstances.
“As a woman, I feel very happy; I am encouraging my fellow farmers to participate. It can be tough to start, but after receiving training, it can sometimes become easier. Women should step forward. Let’s collaborate; if you don’t know something, I will guide you. I will share what I know,” she said.
Another farmer, Wilhelmina Aibes, attended the event to gain new insights, although she did not compete.
Previously a real estate agent, she followed in her father’s footsteps and has taken up full-time farming in Okombahé.
Ismail Aoseb, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, highlighted the importance of agricultural shows for community development.
“When farmers are exposed to events like this, it allows them to see quality; they can identify areas for improvement to present better products at market. As farmers, they can see their peers growing these products, and they can connect and learn from one another,” he explained.
Aoseb noted that the ministry aims to support more women farmers due to their significant success.
He emphasized that prioritizing women farmers will continue to be a focus for the ministry.
