Johannesburg – Laboratory tests have revealed that a chemical responsible for the deaths of several children across the country has been imported from a neighboring country.
Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen confirmed during a media briefing on Thursday that there is no evidence to suggest that the chemical was produced locally.
The substance in question has been identified as terbufos, a highly toxic pesticide typically used in agriculture to kill insects.
In South Africa, only five companies are authorized to manufacture and distribute terbufos for agricultural use.
However, Steenhuisen stated that there are no signs that these companies have illegally distributed the chemical into the wrong hands.
“It is my belief and opinion, and I think this will be confirmed soon, that the terbufos found in South African spaza shops did not come from local manufacturers. If anyone looks at the pictures of what has been found in the shops, it is quite different in color and texture from locally produced terbufos.”
