FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu emphasized, in his opening video address at the official FAO World Soil Day (WSD) ceremony held in Pak Chong, Thailand, “What you cannot measure, you cannot manage.” He pointed out that globally, 1.6 billion hectares of land have been degraded due to human activities, with over 60% of the damage occurring on valuable crop and pasture lands. “To reverse this trend, we need precise soil data and information for informed decision-making about sustainable soil management,” Qu stated.

The event in Thailand was connected via video link to a session at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Saudi Arabia, where WSD was also celebrated as part of Agricultural Food Systems Day. The session in Riyadh launched a regional action plan for sustainable soil management in the Near East and North Africa (NENA).

Soil data provides raw measurements of soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties, while soil information offers interpreted and synthesized data for practical applications and policy-making.

Accurate soil data and information can enable sustainable soil management and effective carbon sequestration, with soils capable of absorbing up to 2 gigatons of CO2 each year. Providing more site-specific data and information about soil helps farmers use fertilizers more effectively, improving nutrient efficiency—especially nitrogen—by up to 30% worldwide.

Healthy soils are essential for food security, nutrition, climate action, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Yet, billions of tons of topsoil are lost every year solely due to erosion, posing a significant threat to soil health. Other threats include salinization, pollution, compaction, and the climate crisis, especially at a time when millions globally face hunger and billions are food insecure.

Through major initiatives like the Global Soil Partnership and the Global Soil Laboratory Network, along with efforts for optimized crops and soils, FAO promotes new soil technologies such as soil sensors, digital mapping, and big data to deliver essential soil insights directly to farmers, scientists, and policymakers.

To date, the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership has trained over 1,900 national experts through its International Network of Soil Information Institutions (INSII), which comprises 122 national institutions.

Soil Science Awards

Today’s ceremony in Thailand also included the presentation of the Glinka World Soil Prize and the King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award 2024.

The Glinka Prize, sponsored by the Russian Federation, was awarded to Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, particularly the Land Development Department (LDD), for global leadership in integrating science, policy, and community-driven initiatives to enhance soil health. It was presented by the Russian Ambassador to Thailand, Evgeny Tomikhin.

The King Bhumibol WSD Award, sponsored by the Kingdom of Thailand, was given to the Ministry of Agriculture of Iran for organizing the best WSD event last year on the theme “Soil and Water, the Source of Life.” This celebration involved over 11 million people and included more than 3,300 registered events. The award was presented by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

During the festivities in Thailand, winners of three competitions related to this year’s theme were also announced: a children’s booklet competition on soil data and information; a farmers’ competition for effective and innovative practices to improve soil health; and a podcast competition to raise awareness among children about the importance of soil led by soil scientists, researchers, teachers, artists, and creative individuals.
