New Delhi, December 11 (IANS). The government has informed Parliament that under the Innovation and Agricultural Entrepreneurship Development Program, over 1,700 agricultural startups have been provided with ₹122.50 crore in the past five years.
This program, which was launched in 2018-19 under the National Agricultural Development Scheme (RKVY), aims to promote innovation and agricultural entrepreneurship by providing financial and technical support to startups.
From 2019-20 to 2023-24, a total of 1,708 agricultural startups received ₹122.50 crore in financial assistance. Agricultural Minister Bhagirath Chaudhary mentioned in a written response in Lok Sabha that the funds were disbursed through five knowledge partners (KPs) and 24 RKVY Agribusiness Incubators (R-ABIs), which provide training and support for launching startups.
During 2023-24, around 532 startups were awarded approximately ₹147.25 crore.
The Minister noted that under this program, startups in agriculture and related sectors can receive financial support of up to ₹5 lakh in the idea phase and up to ₹25 lakh in the seed phase to help them get started.
In July this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare also launched a ₹750 crore ‘AgriShore’ fund in collaboration with NABARD to boost investments in innovative, technology-driven startups in agriculture and rural enterprises.
This fund, announced by NABARD’s subsidiary NABVentures, has an initial corpus of ₹750 crore, with ₹250 crore provided by both NABARD and the Ministry of Agriculture, along with ₹250 crore from other institutions.
The AgriShore fund is structured to support approximately 85 agricultural startups with investments of up to ₹25 crore each by the end of its term. It will invest in sector-specific, sector-agnostic, and debt alternative investment funds (AIF), as well as provide direct equity support to startups.
The focus areas of AgriShore include promoting innovative, technology-driven initiatives in agriculture, enhancing agricultural produce value chains, creating new rural ecosystem linkages and infrastructure, generating employment, and supporting Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). Additionally, the fund aims to encourage entrepreneurship through IT-based solutions for farmers and machinery rental services, fostering sustainable development and progress in the agricultural sector.
