Des Moines – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and other state leaders announced on Wednesday that Iowa is already seeing benefits from a recent 10-day trade trip to India, with more results expected soon.
During a news conference at the Iowa Capitol, Reynolds and others stated that Iowa’s agricultural industry is well-positioned to help feed India’s rapidly growing population, making the potential partnerships from the trade trip meaningful.
Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, stated, “I am confident that the new and long-term opportunities arising from this mission trip will ultimately mean more business growth and community investments for both Iowa and India.”
Reynolds, Durham, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and 14 Iowa business leaders made up the delegation that participated in the trade trip from September 10 to 20.
A spokesperson for the governor’s office mentioned that the costs of the trip haven’t been calculated yet, but expenses will mainly be covered by the representatives’ fees.
Since 1950, India’s population has grown by over 1 billion, and in April 2023, it surpassed China to become the world’s most populous country with nearly 1.5 billion people.
Officials noted that this population increase creates needs for products like biofuels and food items such as pork, turkey, and eggs, which Iowa can help supply.
“There’s growing demand in India for clean energy sources like biofuels—especially ethanol—and sustainable aviation fuel, along with high-quality protein sources such as pork, beef, turkey, eggs, and soybeans. It aligns well with what Iowa farmers can supply,” Naig said.
Naig added, “The possibilities for collaborating, strengthening connections, and building long-term trade and research opportunities are truly exciting, especially as India looks to address its nutritional security and protein consumption needs.”
During the trip, the Iowa delegation met with Indian leaders, including the country’s ministers of food processing, commerce, agriculture, and women and child development.
Reynolds delivered a keynote speech at the US-India Business Council’s India Ideas Summit and engaged with the Council’s board; she hosted business summits in Delhi and Mumbai; and participated in roundtable discussions with the Confederation of Indian Industry, the U.S. Grains Council, the U.S. Soybean Export Council, and the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
The delegation signed memoranda of understanding with organizations such as the Compound Feed Manufacturers Association, the Confederation of Indian Industry, and The Energy and Resources Institute.
Iowa-based agriculture company PowerPollen signed a letter of intent with VNR Seeds of India, specializing in increasing crop production through improved pollination.
Reynolds mentioned that there have been preliminary discussions about a reciprocal visit from an Indian trade delegation to Iowa, and she hopes it aligns with the World Food Prize event held annually in Des Moines.
Reynolds concluded, “It’s hard to overstate the potential long-term impact of the Indian market on our farming families and our state. India could be an ideal partner for us in the coming decades.”
