दिल्ली का न्यूनतम तापमान लगातार दूसरे दिन 20 डिग्री सेल्सियस से नीचे रहा और रविवार को 18.6 डिग्री सेल्सियस पर पहुंच गया, जो सामान्य से एक डिग्री कम है। शनिवार को इस सीजन में पहली बार न्यूनतम तापमान 20 डिग्री सेल्सियस से नीचे चला गया, जब यह 18.6 डिग्री सेल्सियस था।

पिछले साल, दशहरे के अगले दिन (25 अक्टूबर) दिल्ली का AQI 243 (खराब) था। 2022 में 6 अक्टूबर को यह 79 (संतोषजनक) था, जो 2015 के बाद से दशहरे के बाद वाले दिन के लिए दिल्ली में सबसे अच्छा AQI था। दशहरा के बाद सबसे अधिक AQI 2020 (26 अक्टूबर) में 353 (बहुत खराब) था।

According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s national bulletin, the average air quality index (AQI) for the last 24 hours was recorded at 224 in the “poor” category by 4 PM, which is 69 points lower than the 155 (moderate) recorded at the same time the previous day.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which monitors and implements actions during the air pollution crisis, reported an increase in AQI due to “events” observed from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon. “While pollutant concentrations and AQI are showing a declining trend now, the AQI improved to 222 by 5 PM, with further improvement expected over time,” it stated, predicting “moderate” air pollution for Monday.

Citing this improvement, the agency mentioned that it would monitor the situation for another day before deciding to implement Phase 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes increasing mechanized cleaning, shutting down construction and demolition sites larger than 500 square meters, and increasing traffic police deployment in crowded areas.

Another expert noted that Sunday’s poor air quality was due to both meteorological factors and concentrated pollution. Anumita Roychowdhury, Executive Director for Research and Advocacy at the Centre for Science and Environment, stated, “With the onset of winter, the city and larger NCR region need strong preventive measures for better preparedness.”

Delhi’s minimum temperature remained below 20°C for the second consecutive day, reaching 18.6°C on Sunday, which is one degree below normal. It dropped below 20°C for the first time this season on Saturday, when it was also 18.6°C.

Last year, the AQI on the day after Dussehra (October 25) in Delhi was 243 (poor). On October 6, 2022, it was 79 (satisfactory), which was the best AQI for the day after Dussehra in Delhi since 2015. The highest AQI after Dussehra was 353 (very poor) in 2020 (October 26).

However, these trends are significant concerning when festivals occur. The end of October marks a four-week period with particularly high pollution levels, as this is when smoke from agricultural burning occurs in Punjab and Haryana, where farmers burn straw as a cheap and quick method to clear their fields. The next crop cycle begins in the area. This year, Diwali, when thousands typically celebrate with fireworks despite the ban, falls within this timeframe.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature on Sunday reached 35.1°C, which is two degrees above normal. The previous day, it was 33.6°C. According to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department, warm conditions are expected to continue, with maximum temperatures predicted around 35°C and minimum temperatures around 19°C on Monday.
