Agartala, October 17, 2024: Central Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Papitra Margerita, highlighted the significant contribution of the northeastern region to India’s handloom sector and emphasized its high number of weavers. He made these comments during his visit to the ‘Samarth’ skill center in Mohanpur’s Faticherra on Thursday, as part of his three-day trip to the state.
During his visit, Margerita explained that the ‘Samarth’ program is dedicated to encouraging and empowering rural weavers. "Our goal is to uplift the handloom sector by equipping weavers with skills and opportunities," he stated. He praised the central government’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to connect weavers, artisans, and government agencies through an e-portal. This initiative allows for easier access to buying, selling, and participating in national exhibitions.
Earlier in the day, Margerita conducted a review meeting in Khowai to assess the progress of various central government schemes, including those for education, healthcare, agriculture, rural connectivity, and the Jal Jeevan Mission for drinking water.
