Delhi: The Vasant Vihar Art Gallery recently transformed into a showcase of European art, celebrating the cultural connections between Lithuania, France, and Delhi, thanks to the Lithuanian Ambassador to India, Diana Mickevicius.
Mickevicius often jokes that she is the only diplomat to have graduated from Munirka to Vasant Vihar, as she is an alumna of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and returned to India as an ambassador in 2023. On October 19, she shared a piece of her heritage at Vasant Vihar.
To celebrate how culture connects the world, the Lithuanian Embassy hosted an exhibition featuring works by the artist Vytautas Kasiulis at the Surendra Paul Art Gallery in Vasant Vihar.
Kasiulis is one of Lithuania’s most renowned artists. Although he was born and raised in Lithuania, he moved to Paris during World War II to escape Soviet occupation, where both his art and career flourished. At the exhibition opening, Mickevicius described it as "a story of a reluctant migrant, homecoming, global appeal, and the allure of Paris." For Mickevicius, showcasing Kasiulis’s work is a "personal journey," bringing together her three vital cultural identities: Lithuanian, French, and Indian. Kasiulis, who passed away in 1995, symbolizes what Lithuania lost during Soviet occupation. Born in 1918, he left Lithuania for Germany in 1944 before ultimately settling in France, alongside other Lithuanian artists who found exile in Paris.
Mickevicius noted that Kasiulis became an unwilling migrant or refugee artist, originally from Lithuania but based in Paris. He passed away without witnessing Lithuania’s independence.
She mentioned that Kasiulis’s artworks are filled with Lithuanian symbols, particularly depicting rural life close to Lithuania’s "agricultural heart." Yet, they unmistakably reflect Parisian life, showcasing scenes from the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre, and renowned Parisian musicians.
Mickevicius’s first diplomatic posting was in France, which explains the symbolic significance of Kasiulis’s art to her. She expressed gratitude for her experiences in France, and displaying his work in Vasant Vihar made it even more meaningful since she has fond memories of the neighborhood from her time as a JNU student.
She remarked, “I felt it was my duty to give back to the area that has been so kind to me. I am very grateful for the attention and love I have received here.”
The cultural evening was a blend of influences, with food served reflecting a mix of Lithuanian, French, and Indian cuisines, including dark rye bread, cheese, fruit, and snacks like pakoras.
Loisin from the Alliance Française said that sharing these paintings is like sharing the eternal spirit of Paris, emphasizing its significance in bringing everyone together.
Mickevicius warmly embraced Leakhi, calling her a “friend of culture,” and invited her to address the audience.
