On Thursday, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s (ICAR) Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bengaluru licensed new products and technologies, including chocolate made from jackfruit seeds, a vertical farming model, and new varieties of okra and marigold.
Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was signed between IIHR and the Maharashtra Agribusiness Network (MAGNET) Society, aimed at developing smart packages for crops like chili and okra.
This meeting aimed to bridge the gap between industry and academia, providing a platform to share insights and experiences related to entrepreneurship in horticulture.
According to a statement, the event was attended by senior officials from ICAR institutions, NABARD, industry representatives, IIHR incubates, scientists, technical staff, and students.
TK Behera, the director of ICAR-IIHR, emphasized the importance of technology dissemination and sustainability. Despite significant growth in the production of agricultural and horticultural products, efforts are still needed to enhance productivity.
He stated, “There is a need for inclusive efforts from both public and private organizations to supply nutritious food to the nation. Over the past few years, there has been a rise in licensing technologies and various firms at IIHR, creating immense scope for partnerships that can connect farmers and other stakeholders to IIHR’s technologies and services.”
VB Patel, the Assistant Director General of ICAR’s Horticulture Division in New Delhi, called for collaborative research with private companies and encouraged the use of IIHR’s varieties and technologies to benefit farmers.
KG Jagadisha, CEO and Secretary of the Coffee Board, urged for a new revolution in agricultural-horticulture to ensure a continuous supply of healthy, residue-free, and environmentally friendly produce, achievable through public-private partnerships.
Vishnuvardhan, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Horticultural Sciences in Bagalkot, suggested that public and private organizations should work together in teaching, research, education, and entrepreneurship to ensure the country’s food and nutrition security.
US Gautam, ICAR’s Deputy Director General, commended ICAR-IIHR for holding the industry meeting in Bengaluru, which helps disseminate research outputs to stakeholders, including farmers.
An exhibition showcasing products and technologies developed by ICAR institutions and industries was also held during the event.
