Moose Creek – When Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Rob Flack attended the grand opening of Brody Ag and Industrial Inc. in Moose Creek on Thursday, he took some time to share his views on agriculture in his portfolio and in Ontario as a whole.

Minister Flack stated that the expansion of agricultural businesses like Brody is beneficial for the region.

He said, “This symbolizes Rural Ontario and the economy generated by agriculture in this province, which requires a lot of people to thrive. Our province’s GDP is $51 billion, and consumers play a significant role in it. Thus, we have dealerships or companies like this that serve our farmers, ensuring that, especially here with dairy and ruminant industries, we have efficient feeding equipment to produce quality and competitive meat and dairy products.”

Minister Flack, who has a long background in agriculture, openly expressed his feelings about his home province. “I call Ontario the Garden of Eden. We have good soil, and while sometimes we experience too much, we mostly benefit from the Great Lakes’ effect, which provides good moisture.”

“We have excellent temperature regulations, along with top-notch universities and a great highway system. We have a workforce. We employ 871,000 people in this industry, adding 30,000 since 2018. So, we truly are the Garden of Eden. To the south of our border, we have a significant customer base, and we continue to produce more than we consume. In terms of agriculture and food, we offer a great promise, and we need to share this story more loudly and frequently so that people understand where their food comes from and why it is such an essential part of our provincial economy.”

Land use has always been a controversial topic, especially with the nationwide shortage of sustainable housing. How do you balance this with the need for food production? Conflicts over agricultural land, whether to maintain it for farming or convert it, should constantly be a priority.

“It’s always a challenge. It’s a delicate but difficult balance,” Minister Flack said. “Since I was in high school years ago, the province’s population has doubled. Therefore, people need housing. Everyone has the right to a roof over their head and food. We’re managing this mostly thanks to our farmers and innovations in the agricultural food industry. Yields and production have increased. We continue to feed more people every day while still exporting food.”

“However, the key point is that we must protect our best agricultural land wherever and whenever possible.”
