In a significant step to strengthen the agricultural sector and export capabilities of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Saturday with leading agricultural and food associations and industries.
This initiative, co-organized by BAU and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to establish a research center for climate-smart agriculture, which will enhance exports and ensure safe food for local consumers.
The MoU was signed following a workshop held at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the city.
BAU signed the MoU with three organizations, including the Bangladesh Agro Processor Association, the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation, and Spahani Agro Limited.
This MoU will pave the way for the development of the Bangladesh Instrumentation Center for Climate Change and Agricultural Research (BICAR) under the Strengthening Agricultural Tertiary Education Project (SATEP) at BAU.
This ambitious project is expected to be funded by the ADB and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korea, aiming to enhance the response of tertiary agricultural education to industry needs.
BICAR will also manage significant laboratory tests conducted overseas, allowing local traders to benefit from quicker and more cost-effective testing.
Ryohtaro Hayashi, a senior social sector economist at ADB, welcomed the participants, while Professor Dr. Harunur Rashid from BAU presented the goals of SATEP.
Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Huque Bhuiyan, the Vice-Chancellor of BAU, and Professor ASM Golam Hafiz, the Director of Planning and Development at BAU, emphasized the importance of such partnerships for sustainable agricultural development and resilience.
Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan, BAU’s focal point for SATEP, led a panel discussion that included key industry leaders such as MD Abul Hashem, the President of the Bangladesh Agro-Processors Association (BAPA), Syed Mahmudul Haque, the President of the Bangladesh Shrimp Foundation, and others like Miss Fauzia Yasmin, Director of Spahani Agro Limited, and Nasir Ahmed, Executive Director of PRAN-RFL Group.
Fauzia Yasmin discussed Spahani’s work across the entire agricultural value chain, from seeds to bio-pesticides and food processing.
She advocated for more investment in bio-pesticides, climate-smart agriculture, and value chain enhancement.
Highlighting the importance of training and capacity building for farmers, distributors, and stakeholders, she stated, “We need policy-level support to expand sustainable agricultural practices and familiarize farmers with climate-resilient crops and eco-friendly inputs.”
