Shanghai, November 7 (Xinhua) — Recently, several leaders from the U.S. agriculture industry emphasized the importance of cooperation with China, predicting that strong bilateral ties in agriculture would benefit global trade and sustainable development.

They shared their views at the U.S.-China Agricultural Trade Cooperation Forum, held as part of the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) taking place from November 5 to 10.

Long-Standing Partnership

For Jim Sutter, the CEO of the U.S. Soybean Export Council, China is a major trading partner, and the relationship is “extremely important.” He noted that U.S. soy has had a long-term cooperative relationship with China for 42 years.

Sutter expressed appreciation for China’s leadership in promoting openness and trade. “Trade is crucial for all our agricultural products, and we’re glad that a country like China recognizes this and discusses its importance at platforms like the CIIE, which is all about trade.”

The CIIE, the world’s first national-level import expo focused on imports, featured a section dedicated to U.S. food and agricultural companies this year, aimed at helping them explore the Chinese market. This year, the section attracted 14 participants, and impressively, within just the first hour, total transactions reached 600 million U.S. dollars, according to the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.

“China is our largest and most important market,” said Elisa Lau, director of Cotton Council International in China, a nonprofit trade association promoting U.S. cotton fibers and products. She highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the Chinese and American cotton industries, which is due not only to their interdependence but also to their mutually beneficial relationship.

Towards a Sustainable Future

Several speakers at the forum shared similar views, stating that despite the changing global landscape, U.S.-China agricultural cooperation remains beneficial for both countries’ sustainable development paths.

Janna Fritz, vice president of the American Soybean Export Council, described the strong U.S.-China relationship in the soybean industry as a “beacon of hope and strength” for global agriculture. She mentioned that the mutually beneficial ties have influenced agricultural practices and lifestyles in both countries.

Fritz noted that China’s growing demand for sustainable, high-quality crops has set a high standard for soybean purchases in terms of quality and sustainability. She emphasized that American soybean farmers “understand that mission” and will continue to assist China in meeting its ambitious sustainability goals.

Looking at the vast potential for cooperation, Steve Reinhard, chairman of the United Soybean Board, stated that China is entering a stage of high-quality development as it seeks to meet the increasing demand for high-standard products. Reinhard added, “Our commitment to sustainability can serve as a new productive force for Chinese partners in achieving high-quality development.”

To facilitate this growing partnership, the CIIE has set an example by connecting U.S. agricultural firms with long-term Chinese partners. According to AmCham Shanghai, U.S. companies have continued to receive orders even after participating in last year’s expo, with cumulative transactions now reaching 3 billion dollars.

During the opening ceremony of this year’s expo, Chinese Premier Li Qiang reaffirmed the country’s commitment to “turning its vast market into global opportunities.” He stated that the country has fully implemented all initiatives announced during the previous six CIIEs and will continue to expand market access to more sectors.

Ryan LeGrand, president and CEO of the U.S. Grains Council, remarked that agricultural trade is a “bright spot” in the complex U.S.-China relationship. He noted, “While our ideological differences may set boundaries in our relationship, trade establishes a level of friendship, particularly in agriculture, helping to create and maintain that foundation.”

He concluded by saying, “When trade works, the world wins. I believe this certainly applies to U.S.-China relations.” ■
