COTED, CARICOM के भीतर एक प्रमुख निर्णय लेने वाली संस्था है, जो पूरे क्षेत्र में औद्योगिक और कृषि वस्तुओं के उत्पादन, गुणवत्ता नियंत्रण और विपणन को बढ़ावा देने पर ध्यान केंद्रित करती है। यह क्षेत्रीय आर्थिक विकास के लिए एकीकरण प्रयासों का समर्थन करते हुए CARICOM सिंगल मार्केट एंड इकोनॉमी (CSME) के संचालन की भी देखरेख करता है।

COTED एजेंडे के लिए क्षेत्रीय और बाहरी व्यापार मुद्दों की समीक्षा के लिए अधिकारियों ने 7-8 नवंबर को वस्तुतः बैठक की। CARICOM सिंगल मार्केट और ट्रेड के सहायक महासचिव, राजदूत वेन मैककुक ने बैठक के महत्व पर प्रकाश डाला, अधिकारियों से प्रमुख व्यापार मामलों को संबोधित करने और कार्रवाई योग्य सिफारिशों को अंतिम रूप देने का आग्रह किया। जिन मुद्दों पर चर्चा की गई उनमें समुदाय के मुख्य व्यापार उपकरण, विशेष रूप से सामान्य बाहरी टैरिफ (सीईटी) और उत्पत्ति के नियम शामिल थे।

Senior trade officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have finalized preparations for the 59th Ministerial Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), which will take place in Georgetown, Guyana on November 27-28.

COTED is a key decision-making body within CARICOM that focuses on promoting the production, quality control, and marketing of industrial and agricultural goods across the region. It also oversees the operations of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), supporting regional economic development and integration efforts.

To review regional and external trade issues for the COTED agenda, officials held a virtual meeting on November 7-8. Ambassador Wayne McCook, the assistant secretary-general for the CARICOM Single Market and Trade, emphasized the importance of the meeting, urging officials to address key trade matters and finalize actionable recommendations. Topics discussed included the community’s main trade instruments, particularly the Common External Tariff (CET) and rules of origin.

Barbara Williams, the deputy national authorized officer and coordinator for the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) implementation for Antigua and Barbuda, chaired the meeting. She highlighted priority areas related to the CSME, including policies for the free movement of CARICOM citizens, a draft policy on mergers and acquisitions regulation, and progress on the community intellectual property framework.

Along with updates on CARICOM’s multilateral interests and the upcoming 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), there was also a focus on external trade relations. Additionally, officials reviewed the CARICOM-Colombia trade agreement to secure improved preferential market access.

The ministerial meeting will be chaired by the Honorable Everly Paul Chet Green, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs for Antigua and Barbuda. The outcomes of the meeting are expected to significantly impact trade and economic development within the CARICOM region, aligning with the organization’s broader goals for regional integration and development.
