One issue that deeply troubles me and seems extremely cruel and unnecessary is fur trading.

Millions of wild animals are captured in small, bare wire cages and killed in brutal ways, all for fashion. This is completely unacceptable in our animal-loving country.

Because of this, I am proud that the previous Labour government decided to ban fur farming on our shores 20 years ago.

However, it is sad that the story does not end there, as since 2003 we have outsourced this cruelty to the rest of the world by allowing the import and sale of fur in Britain.

In July, after a significant electoral victory for Labour, I used the opportunity to discuss “speaking for animal welfare because animals cannot speak for themselves” during the King’s Speech debate.

Now, I am putting those words into action to put an end to the UK’s role in this cruelty once and for all.

Last month, after including it on the ballot, I introduced a new private member’s bill to ban the import and sale of animal fur in the UK.

This law has been in the works for decades, with animal welfare NGOs like Four Paws UK, Humane Society International/UK, and the broader Fur Free Britain coalition continuously highlighting the terrible conditions that animals endure in fur farms or when captured in the wild.

Compassionate British citizens have been at the forefront, signing petitions, joining protests, and using social media to support #FurFreeBritain.

This issue will be back in the spotlight next week when my friend and colleague Adam Holloway MP hosts a special event in Parliament featuring celebrity animal advocates like Will Young and Pete Wicks, supported by me and animal conservation organizations like Four Paws UK and Humane Society International/UK.

Since the Fur Free movement began, over 1,500 fashion retailers and leading global designers have refused to use or sell fur, and it’s been almost a year since the British Fashion Council imposed a fur ban at London Fashion Week.

Besides being cruel and reflecting consumer disinterest, fur production poses a serious threat to global public health.

Cramming stressed animals together makes fur farms ripe for the development and spread of dangerous zoonotic diseases such as COVID-19 and avian flu.

Recently, eleven new viruses were discovered in animals on Chinese fur farms, including a concerning new bat coronavirus that top virologists have described as a “toss of the dice” and a “clear pandemic risk.”

I am extremely proud of my party’s record on animal welfare, from the domestic fur farming ban to the ban on animal testing for cosmetics, the Animal Welfare Act, and the Hunting Act.

All these have been crucial steps in correcting past mistakes and showing the importance of animals to the British people.

As you can imagine, I was pleased when DEFRA Secretary Steve Reed MP announced that the upcoming Labour government will oversee the biggest boost for animal welfare in a generation.

I believe my bill presents a perfect opportunity to take the first major step in that boost, ending the UK’s support for the cruel and unnecessary killing of millions of animals each year.

As I said, animals cannot speak for themselves, and they rely on us to be their voice. So please join me in urging MPs from all political parties to support my bill and make #FurFreeBritain a reality.
