Lundu (December 5): The pilot Metropolitan Food Cluster (MFC) project in Opar, Lundu, highlights the potential to modernize Sarawak’s agricultural and food sectors, according to Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi Yusof, the Minister of Food Industries, Commodities, and Regional Development.
Dr. Rundi emphasized that this initiative aims to contribute to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) while ensuring food security.
“We are heavily reliant on imported food products, including 70% of our rice, which comes from Vietnam and India. If these countries face climate challenges, they may be unable to export to us. This highlights the need to modernize our agricultural sector for food security,” he stated during a groundbreaking ceremony for the MFC in Stungkor Baru.
Dr. Rundi noted that the MFC Opar project is exceptional and new, especially for the agricultural community in Sarawak.
The project was initiated after two years of discussions and brainstorming sessions, following a study visit to the Netherlands in 2022 to learn about the MFC model.
“After two years of talks and brainstorming, we have finally reached this stage – the groundbreaking ceremony for the MFC in Opar,” he said.
“We are excited to collaborate with our partners in the Netherlands, hoping that one day our agricultural community will be held in high regard, similar to developed countries like the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. This is my dream, and achieving it will be a challenging task. The only way to empower the agricultural industry is by adopting new technologies,” he emphasized.
The MFC Opar, led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is a pioneer project aimed at modernizing Sarawak’s food industry.
This project has been developed based on a public-private-community partnership involving the Ministry of Food Industries, Commodities, and Regional Development (M-FICORD), the Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB), and the Sarawak Metropolitan Food Cluster Consortium (SMFCC) Sdn Bhd, along with local communities.
In addition to being integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), it will utilize advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and climate-controlled boxes.
