Last Monday, FFA (Future Farmers of America) and 4-H joined forces to gather trees for the Tinsel Trail at Boat Basin.

The Tinsel Trail features a beautiful collection of trees that many community members and businesses decorate for the holiday season. Each tree is decorated based on the background or work of the organization or company. For example, the Georgia’s Own Credit Union decorated their tree with money, the Southwest Georgia Mardi Gras Society adorned theirs with colorful masks, giant beads, and bows, while Bridge Behavioral Consulting themed their tree around characters from the Pixar film “Inside Out.”

FFA and 4-H have been involved with Tinsel Trail since it started five years ago. With help from Dan Provance from Hopkins Farm in North Carolina and Springhill Tree Farm, the trees were ready by Sunday. Students were out for Thanksgiving break starting Monday, making it a perfect time to stake the trees. The preparation involved fresh-cutting the tree trunks, making holes for the stands, adjusting the size, staking, and finally securing them. The city also contributes by running water lines and providing electricity for lights and decorations, as explained by Chamber President Karen Tobin.

Tobin mentioned that the FFA and 4-H have done such a great job with the tree staking tradition over the years that the Chamber decided to ask for their help again and allocated sponsorship funds among the chapters. “The Chamber staff decided last year that having them stake the trees would prevent them from falling due to bad weather. So, we reached out to our local FFA and 4-H chapters for assistance, and the sponsorship money we collect for staking is distributed among the chapters. This year it totaled over $2000!” She continued, “It feels like a small-town effort, and we couldn’t be happier with the participation and dedication from our committee, FFA, 4-H, and the city of Bainbridge. The Chamber is thrilled to bring the SWGA Tinsel Trail to the community. It’s a wonderful experience to drive down or stroll along the riverbank lights on Hatcher Road.”

Lindsay Hayes, County Extension Coordinator for 4-H, said, “4-H takes this opportunity to decorate a tree in Tinsel Trail and highlight agriculture. Agriculture is Georgia’s and Decatur County’s number one industry! We love to showcase some agricultural products.”

FFA advisor Victoria Harrell echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are lucky to have the Southwest Georgia Tinsel Trail here in Bainbridge. The Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly every year to make this happen successfully. We are grateful for their support in helping us implement this event annually.”
