Terrentum is much smaller than Pittsburgh, but the need for urban farming to help the poor is just as significant.

A small community garden, started in 2015 in this Alle-Kiski Valley community of over 4,000 people, is now feeding low-income residents and others who struggle to find food in a borough where there are no grocery stores, according to Rev. Philip Beck, who manages the farm.

Terrentum officials and Beck have a 99-year lease allowing the community to farm a plot next to Riverview Memorial Park for just $1 a year.

Unlike many farms that use fences to keep unwanted animals or people out, this one has no barriers. The garden paths are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Beck wants everyone to feel welcome to come and take the food they need.

Beck said, “If we put up a fence around here, we would defeat the whole purpose of this garden, which is to provide an open space for people.”

The small farm grows a variety of produce, including pears, blackberries, blueberries, carrots, collard greens, tomatoes, dill, chives, sweet peppers, squash, cucumbers, and more.

There are several low-income and senior apartment buildings nearby, and Beck said that residents often rely on the garden as their primary source of fresh produce. Others come from neighboring communities.

Beck noted that on average, up to 20 people may stop by the farm in a day to pick produce.

He stated, “We really can’t keep up.”

Dozens of volunteers help with watering the crops, weeding, and showing visitors which crops are ready for harvest. Many volunteers have started their own backyard gardens after helping at the farm.

D.J. Spencer, a 60-year-old resident of Brackenridge, has volunteered at the Terrentum farm for nearly three years. She and her husband, George, who is the organist at Beck’s First United Presbyterian Church, stop by once a week to water the plants.

Spencer said, “Given the widespread food insecurity, I think this work is important for the area.”

In spring, Spencer helps prepare raised beds for planting, and in fall, she cleans them up after the growing season ends.

Spencer mentioned that she often sees people stopping by in the mornings to pick up food.

She said that many people have become dependent on the farm for fresh produce and that some take time to pull a few weeds while they are there.

She added, “What I like most about it is that it is open to anyone. No questions are asked about income level or anything like that.”

Jodie Shoemaker, 62, from Natrona Heights, organizes volunteer shifts to water the plants. She also helps with other tasks, like planting seeds and laying mulch.

A retired teacher from the Highlands School District, Shoemaker has been volunteering for five years and takes on more responsibilities every season.

She said, “I really enjoy volunteering and keeping it local,” sometimes bringing her grandchildren along to help.

Maintaining the farm requires many people, many of whom quietly help behind the scenes. Shoemaker noted that many volunteers find a sense of peace caring for the plants and giving back to the community.

“It’s a very meaningful project, and many people benefit from it,” she stated. “A lot of people come by and see what’s available.”

Beck mentioned that they do not use any pesticides on the farm and grow food in raised beds with high-quality soil.

Like many local farms, the Terrentum Friendship Garden also serves as a gathering place. Beck noted that school groups occasionally stop by, and a small free library and food pantry attract visitors to the farm.

Beck said, “We’ve created a space that used to be just grass, which helps feed people not only in body but potentially in spirit too. It builds community and friendship.”

On one recent day, while walking along the paths covered with wood chips, Beck enjoyed the scent of freshly chosen oregano and paused to point out a goldfinch pecking at seeds on an orange zinnia.

Beck finds peace at the farm, despite the noisy trucks on First Avenue often interrupting the humming bees and chirping birds. He enjoys working with volunteers and meeting the people who stop by.

Beck noted, “It gives a sense of community.”

He added that the farm brings together a unique mix of people from diverse backgrounds.

“You could have a million dollars or zero dollars,” he emphasized. “We don’t care about religious affiliations or who they are going to vote for in the next election. Those concerns vanish here.”

A variety of flowers, including Beck’s favorite, sunflowers, attract birds, bees, and butterflies. Volunteers collect their seeds each year to replant in the spring.

Beck remarked, “They bring joy, not just food.”

However, maintaining an urban farm involves challenges beyond sunshine and sunflowers.

This year, hailstorms damaged plants and crops. Every year, Beck struggles to find enough volunteers for necessary upkeep.

Beck mentioned that the farm cannot meet the community’s needs. While there are discussions about expanding the farm, that would require more volunteers and time—things that are not always easy to find.
