Pippa Hackett, the Green Party candidate in Offaly, acknowledges that the upcoming general election will be challenging for her.

She spoke after launching her campaign with a 5 km run along the Grand Canal Bank in Tullamore, where the weekly park run has resumed.

Minister Hackett then cycled along the canal Greenway to Shannon Harbour.

“I believe I have a vision for Offaly that no other candidate possesses. We need to look forward instead of dwelling on the past. My vision is about forward-thinking, and I think Offaly and its communities will greatly benefit from Pippa Hackett representing them in the next Dáil,” said the organic farmer and senator from Geashill.

She expressed happiness about helping to bring back the Grand Canal Parkrun after it was paused for several weeks due to issues with Waterways Ireland.

“I was glad to help bring it back. We’ve been talking to Waterways Ireland and have resolved some issues, and I am heading to Shannon Harbour with several colleagues along the Greenway, where we will stop in Rahan and Pullough. It’s a beautiful day for it and a great way to see parts of Offaly that you usually wouldn’t see, so I am really looking forward to it.”

“The Greenway runs all the way from Edenderry to Shannon Harbour, allowing for over 60 km of cycling along the canal in Offaly.”

“This has been an important aspect of green policies. It’s one of many issues, but it connects the county and the Midlands. Many people use the Greenway. We are going to rent bikes from Ballinacourty (from Dick’s Bike Hire at Ballinacourty Bakery), and they are fantastic, bringing them here to Tullamore for us to cycle to the harbor.”

Minister Hackett, who ran for the Dáil for the first time in 2020 and came sixth in the five-seat Laois-Offaly constituency, agreed that this election will be tough for her party.
