Roanoke, Virginia (WDBJ) – Virginia Western Community College offers a program that helps solve problems through science.
When you enroll, you can choose different paths in the Biotechnology program at Virginia Western Community College.
“The biotechnology program has two degree options. One is an Associate of Science (AS) degree, and the other is a Career Studies Certificate (CSC). They differ in the number of classes you take and the time it takes to complete them,” said Kristelia Ozeda, a professor of biotechnology.
During the program, students will learn skills needed to work in a laboratory.
“They will learn to use basic lab equipment as well as some advanced, specialized lab tools. They will also gain skills needed to operate these tools, along with general lab skills such as documentation and cleanliness. Other courses like biology, chemistry, microbiology, and some math will also be part of this foundation,” Ozeda explained.
Graduates of the program say it leads to a rewarding career.

“Our CSC has been around for several years, but our two-year program is brand new. It’s just one year old, and we’ve made it online to help train lab technicians and fill gaps in the workforce,” Ozeda said.
“We help solve major issues like cancer and heart disease, and I believe having a trained local workforce offers new opportunities for people while also helping integrate more into the community,” said Jennifer Munson, director of the Cancer Research Center in Roanoke.
