Grips Energy, a German renewable energy company, is proud to announce the opening of two photovoltaic plants for tea production in Igara and Buhweju through its subsidiary, Grips Energy Uganda Limited, located in Kampala.

In the southwestern region of Uganda, Grips Energy and Igara Growers Tea Factory Limited celebrated the successful completion of these projects, which were attended by distinguished guests from business and government sectors. The 499-kilowatt and 425-kilowatt ground-mounted solar plants are significant steps in reducing electricity costs and carbon footprints for 7,000 small tea farmers in the area.

Factory engineer Zali stated, “We partnered with Grips Energy because we couldn’t manage the investment costs for these plants on our own. They handled 100% of the financing and construction and are now taking care of the system maintenance.” He added, “We hope to continue our partnership with Grips Energy as we aim to expand our factories, and they will help us establish more green energy solutions.”

Andrew Kasule, Grips Energy Uganda’s sales manager, confirmed: “Our approach to create a close-knit project team with our client Igara Growers Tea Factory and our engineering experts in Germany has once again proven its effectiveness. As their long-term partner, we will provide full performance, service, and maintenance guarantees for the solar plants throughout the 20-year contract duration.”

Consistent with the company’s full-service offerings, Grips was responsible for every detail of the project, from initial feasibility studies and customized plant design to financing, installation, and commissioning. Now that the plants are operational, Grips will manage their operation and maintenance through a local engineering partner. “We are excited to support economic development and energy sustainability for tea producers in Uganda through these solar projects. Igara Growers Tea Factory Limited operates two tea processing factories: Igara Tea Factory and Buhweju Tea Factory. Both factories are wholly owned by 7,000 smallholder tea farmers and contribute 10% to Uganda’s total tea production from 28 tea factories in the country, making them the largest smallholder tea factory company in Uganda.
