Belgaum: Villagers displaced by the Karanja irrigation project in Bidar district have been protesting for 885 days due to the government’s failure to provide promised compensation for their land.

Kallappa Rathod, a 58-year-old farmer leading the protests, highlighted the plight of hundreds of families who lost their agricultural land. "We began protesting in 2022, demanding compensation for our land taken for the project. Many of us have received only partial compensation or nothing at all, while only a few have received full payment," he said.

Last year, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assured a delegation from the protesters that their dues would be paid before the 2024 budget. Similarly, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had promised during the last Lok Sabha elections while campaigning for Congress candidate Sagar Khandre.
