Experts and traders have highlighted a declining share of cotton in global fiber consumption, a trend that is also evident in India, where the production and use of synthetic and cellulosic fibers are on the rise.
“The Indian fashion industry has started to embrace the global trend of using multi-fiber in most textile products. Blends, especially tri-blends, are gaining popularity in high-end and retail fashion sectors due to their superior functional qualities,” said Prabhu Dhamodharan, coordinator of the Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF).
“There is no doubt that global consumption of man-made fibers has increased. However, the introduction of quality control orders (QCO) has led to a reduction in the import of these fibers. As a result, imports of fibers have decreased,” added K. Selvaraju, Secretary General of the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA).
Use of Recycled Threads
“The consumption of cotton has already been affected by human-made fibers. Now, the use of recycled threads is increasing, which is also negatively impacting cotton consumption,” said Ramanuj Das Buba, of the All India Cotton Brokers Association, who works as a sourcing agent for multinational and domestic textile companies.
Anand Popat, a cotton and yarn trader based in Rajkot, mentioned, “This trend has been emerging since the COVID period.”
According to the USDA’s report titled “Cotton: World Market and Trade,” global cotton consumption is estimated to reach 115.2 million bales (each weighing 226.8 kg) in 2024-25, which is close to the ten-year average but down by more than 9 million bales from the record levels seen four years ago.
“This is despite record global fiber consumption in calendar year 2023, as synthetic fibers are meeting rising world demand,” it stated.
Reasons Behind the Shift
Dhamodharan of ITF noted a growing use of cellulosic and polyester fibers in basic products due to cost dynamics that appeal to a larger population. He explained, “Inflation and pricing challenges are prompting the textile ecosystem to explore these alternatives.”
“In the past three years, the use of man-made fibers has increased, while cotton usage has declined in comparison to overall fiber consumption. I would say cotton usage hasn’t decreased per se, but it has not seen growth like man-made fibers. That is why its share in overall fiber consumption is declining,” Popat mentioned.
The ITF coordinator noted, “Yarn and fabric manufacturers have started adopting blends of cotton and cellulosic fibers to improve operational efficiency and achieve better finishes.” He remarked that these changes are controlling cotton consumption and prices in India.
“The trend of using recycled threads and fabrics is rapidly increasing due to competitive prices. However, this seems to affect the quality of yarn and fabrics,” Das Buba added.
Stagnation in Cotton Growth
“Cotton consumption has remained around 150 million bales, give or take 2.5 to 5 million bales. It has stayed consistent over the past few years while the usage of synthetic fibers has increased,” Popat explained.
The USDA indicated that China has been a major supplier of synthetic fibers due to unprecedented capacity and competitive pricing. “Ultimately, steady growth in cotton production has also put pressure on cotton consumption,” it stated.
A report by Textile Exchange mentioned that polyester has been the primary driver of growth in global synthetic fiber production. In 2023, production surged to 71 million tons (equivalent to approximately 37 million bales), marking an 8 million ton increase year-on-year. This annual production growth accounted for nearly one-third of the world’s annual cotton consumption.
The total synthetic fiber production was around 84 million tons (including other fibers like nylon, polypropylene, acrylic, and elastane), indicating that polyester constitutes nearly 85 percent of synthetic fibers. Meanwhile, global production of cellulosic fiber increased by 500,000 tons (equivalent to 2.3 million bales), reaching 7.9 million tons, with most of that being rayon (also known as viscose) at 6.3 million tons.
Stable Prices
An annual report from the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) stated that cellulosic fiber production in 2023 was 15 percent higher than five years ago.
“Efforts are currently underway to promote recycled threads widely, including consideration for certification,” Das Buba noted.
As a result, cotton prices have decreased and stabilized around 53,000-54,500 rupees per candy (356 kilograms), amidst a forecast harvest of 29.926 million bales (325.22 million bales less than before).
“Prices oscillate by around ₹1,000/candy from time to time. Old cotton stocks are being sold around ₹53,000, and many spinning mills have secured their stock,” the sourcing agent from Raichur mentioned.
Traders believe it is a good time to buy cotton due to its quality. However, quality may be affected after January. Daily arrivals of cotton are approximately 200,000 bales, with the Cotton Corporation of India purchasing at least 50 percent under its price support scheme. The rest is being bought by spinning mills.
“So far, the CCI has reported purchasing at least 2 million bales, at a cost of about ₹60,000,” Das Buba added.
