The Agrihouse Foundation, with the support of partners, is hosting the 14th edition of the Pre-Harvest Agribusiness Conference and Exhibition from Tuesday, October 29, to Thursday, October 31, 2024, at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
This year’s theme is “Connecting Unconnected People – Accelerating Farmer-Buyer Connectivity to Reduce Post-Harvest Losses.” The goal is to address one of the major challenges in the agricultural sector: minimizing post-harvest losses through improved market relationships.
Albert Nana Akya Akosa, the Executive Director of Agrihouse Foundation, stated that over the past 13 years, the conference and exhibitions have evolved into the largest market linkage platform in Ghana, successfully connecting over 197,000 farmers with markets.
For this year’s event, Ms. Akosa highlighted that the aim is to provide even more opportunities for learning, networking, and business development.
She mentioned that this edition will include key components such as a farmer-to-farmer training session that offers practical training modules where experienced field representatives will mentor selected farmer groups, including those with disabilities and women-led groups. The objective is to enhance farmers’ skills in managing machinery, tools, and agricultural inputs, which will lead to increased productivity and new market opportunities.
Sara Rauffler, the Manager of the Commission for Sustainable Employment through Agribusiness in Ghana, said that the pre-harvest initiative is implemented as part of a market program by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU) in Northwestern Ghana.
“We are pleased to be part of an event that promotes meaningful connections and addresses the serious challenges facing the agricultural sector,” she said.
Ms. Rauffler added that the Pre-Harvest Festival has historically provided a platform to tackle crucial issues, including the devastating effects of post-harvest losses on agricultural productivity.
Christopher Gaitu, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection and Regulatory Service Directorate, promised strong government support for this year’s event.
